Posted about 5 years ago We provide 24-7 coverage within the city, however, the county patrol and dentention deputies go home about midnight. So after midnight, I'm the only person on in the entire city and county. I fsomething happens in the county, dispatch has to call a deputy out, that is if the sheriff will authorize the overtime. And if something big happens in my city, I have to call someone out.

Posted about 5 years ago we have minimum 7 on our night team.....buti tell ya some nites its a ghost town....noone out...no radio traffic for hours.... John 15:13; " Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his Friends.." We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.... Lord, keep Your arm around my shoulder and Your hand over my mouth .

Posted about 5 years ago my department only has 1 on at a time always but we do have 24 hour coverage. I work the midnight shift and my nearest backup is 10 miles at best when that town has an officer on. There are only 4 towns in my county with 24 hour coverage and two of those have different dispatch centers. So between the 2 towns and the county deputies it can get real quiet at night, in fact i haven't heard any radio traffic in about 20 minutes, is my radio even on, oh wait it is, just another midweek night shift.

Posted about 5 years ago My department is small and we only have 1 officer working at night, and there is only 2 county deputies working the entire county one on each side. If I get into anything it would take either deputy close to 20-30 minutes at times to get to you depending on how far out they are. Some nights its quiet but most of the time I stay busy, we have the Interstate 10 running through our city and the main road going through it the direct access route to Panama City Beach...So you can only imagine the traffic going through our city. Spring Breakers think it is a race track to the beach...until they get hit with the laser.

Posted about 5 years ago I can say yes, but I was. I'm a trooper working Operation Border Star on the Mexican Border. I am about 500 miles South of my normal duty station. We are assigned certain areas to work down here over a 5 county area that are known drug and alien smuggling route. I work from 6p-7a. The other night I was assigned to this FM road in the middle of fu*%#ng nowhere. I was bored, around 3 AM I turned down this dead end county road and drove for about 5 miles. Middle of some 50,000 acre rance, out of my element, AND ALONE! Closed back up was at the Border Patrol Checkpoint about 30 miles away. Found a rattlesnake crawling across the road, got out and took several pictures of it. Very desolate, kinda eerie!

| Posted about 5 years ago Right now we have 6 on my shift and back-up is usually close. I have been in a small department where I was the only officer and the nearest back-up could be 30 away. | Posted about 5 years ago Done it and often still do... Ya know, sometimes folks in big departments look down on us rural guys because of lack of call load etc... but I cant help but wonder how some of those hot-shots would hold up in some of our situations. Not a crack against them of course...hell, I probably couldnt hang with them on their turf either. |

Posted about 5 years ago You are it. There is no one else. It is a continuing education in Policing 101. Back up is usually in bed or at best the next county and in my situation the next State. Yes you feel alone and isolated but i will have to give props to PL it does allow for some connection with the rest of the civilized law enforcement community.

Posted about 5 years ago We generally have 2 Troopers out for mids for 3 counties, but sometimes 1 will blow in sick and leave one guy covering all 3 counties. We have local S.O.'s in each county that will come running if we get in a bind! Thankful for that!

Posted about 5 years ago While many of us were in one man units and spread over the city if you called on the horn for help or the call was hot you knew that your brothers would bust their butt getting to you fast. I preferred my single unit be be honest but loved to see my brothers just happen to ride by as well.

During the day we normallly have between 2 and 4 out and in the evenings we generally have 5-7 out but after 0400 the most that are out would be two and a lot of nights it's 1. |
