First off either join the military and/or get your collage degree. Then after you are 21 yrs old you can apply at the agency who you think has the best opportunity for you and where you wish to settle down at. Both the education and military will be indispensable for your career and one or both is necessary and/or preferable to get you hired. You can still take to the different police agencies out there during this time to get a real feel for who you wish to work for. In some instances you can even get permission from your Commanding Officer to join with a reserve police department if you are stateside for more experience and info plus you can even perform police duties in the military. It will all go to helping you find out if your really want to become a police officer, it is really a way of life, and if so will provide you a bid advantage over others your age.

I know for sure that i will get my college degree in criminal justice, thats a must, but after that i will look into the advice you have given me. Thanks. If you dont mind i have another question: Is it true that if you have a criminal justice degree your more likely to make lots more money than someone without one?

That is what the colleges would like for you to think. How about a business degree, with a minor in CJ? If you are concerned with making money, you are going to want to be promoted, and a BS in business admin would help that more than a CJ degree will help you get hired. You might also look at the previous threads, there are loads of these type of questions that have been posted. Good luck to you.

One of the things I did that really helped me get hired was joining an Explorer Post. Your local department should have one. I was able to ride-along a lot and learned so much from the officers. I also was allowed to take part in certain training. You can be an Explorer until your 21st birthday.

The previous advice you received was good advice. Robocop knows what he is talking about. I don't know about alabama, but in NJ you do get paid more for having a higher education. There are a couple of officers in my area that also have their law degree as well. Although I do not think this is needed.
