After 5 years being in Law Enforcement, I find myself getting a part-time job so that my wife does not have to work. She wants to stay at home and take care of the children so that we don't have an additional expense of child care. I think it would be better if these agencies would just get budget increase approvals (Yea right) so that we can get paid better so that we don't have to work 2nd jobs. What do you think?

what types of second jobs are people working?

I work private details (bars, clubs, baseball games, and road work etc.) for the PD. I also do some catering on the side.

I'm lucky that in the town I work there is ALOT of road construction and according to state law, there has to be an officer at a road job if traffic is going to be diverted in any way. That includes a simple lane shift. This is great for us because our road job pay is $55 per hour during the week 7am to 5pm. On weekends, nights (5pm to 7am), and holidays the rate goes up to $75 and hour. Right now there is so much work I am working at least one job a week for about 12 hrs a day.

I think it would be nice to have childcare at the dept. We have odd hours that childcare facilities don't accomadate. Biggest reason I really had to leave. Of course, My hubby is a cop too so we had the double bubble wammy of scheduling conflicts. Luckily our dept paid well and we had a lot of extra side-jobs to help further facilitate the income.

I have a friend who is married to a cop and she wants to start a day care for law enforcement and firefighters. When on shift work it is hard to find child care at night. She wants to open a 24 hour day care that had people in uniforms coming in to pick up thier kids. When I have kids (if I can affoed them) I want them around other law enforcemnt familys.
And yes we should get paid more money. We have a hard job and do not get compinsated enough for it.

Unfortunately second jobs are not uncommon. Bigger Budgets is what we need! My husband and I are both Officers, he works a second job to help with the bills. Shame that we can't manage with out it.

For those part timers out there - what do you do for health insurance? do your departments give insurance? if you have two part time jobs, im not really sure how that works.

im currently in the process of being hired with the sheriffs department here part time, because that's what the department is. i havent had a chance to ask and of the deputies yet what they do, but i thought this would be a good place to ask.

Oh Man...I can't eat those things unless I am working third shift, and not until after 5am!

I teach on occassion...some at a local colllege and firearms at a local career center that has an open enrollment police academy. Normally, I don't however, as we have a ton of overtime since we are really short-handed. O/T pays about $50.00 an hour, compared to $33.00 on special duty. The career center pays a whopping $21.00, but it is a hell of a lot of fun, and it pays into the state retirement fund.
