A woman shot in a murder-suicide Sunday night outside a Wal-Mart in the 5300 block of North Garland Avenue is resting in serious but stable condition at Parkland Memorial Hospital.

The woman, Shyrica Monique Porch, 28, has been identified as a Dallas County Sheriff’s Department detention officer and has told police an argument ensued with her husband Damon Raynall Porch, 29. Damon shot Shyrica in the head and then turned the gun on himself, police say.

At about 7 p.m. Garland firefighters, who had visited the store to buy supplies, found Shyrica down behind a car at a Wal-Mart Supercenter location in Garland. They found she had a gunshot wound to the head but was conscious. Damon was found dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to his head and had a gun lying on his chest, according to police.

Porch, an off-duty detention officer, serves the department at the Decker Detention Facility, located on Interstate 35, on midnight watch. Garland police are investigating the incident. Porch was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

“(Porch) is a member of our department family and we want her to know that we are here for her,” said Lupe Valdez, Dallas County Sheriff. “Her recovery is first and foremost. She is in all of our prayers.”

Porch relocated to the Metroplex in 2005 as Hurricane Katrina closed in on her hometown of New Orleans, La. She was hired by the department on Dec. 19, 2005. Her duties as a detention services officer are the immediate care and custody of Dallas County inmates. “We all go through trials and tribulations at some point in our lives. Some people more than others,” Valdez said. “Officer Porch has endured a lot.”

Sheriff Lupe Valdez and Chief Jesse Flores have visited bed side with Porch and are in contact with family members.

A very sad and tragic situation. Prayers for a speedy recovery. The article doesn't state if the couple had any children. May her husband rest in peace.
