In my facility I am not allowed to carry handcuffs, OC, or PPE except for latex gloves. What do you think and how can i try to change it

I think an inmate can kill you if he got his hands on one of the above mentioned items. Ever seen what a pair of handcuffs can do to a human skull ?

I guess thats true. My concern is that it is one of me against 300 of them. I have nothing to possibly defend myself besides my man down button.

The odds will never be in your favor, even with OC. The best weapon you have is your brain. If you haven't, take some classes on 'verbal judo'. I know it sounds silly, but it works.

I remember actually learning that while doing training with a commander from Phoenix PD. I was just kind of curious to find out if this was common practice for correctional facilities.

i THINK THIS IS WHERE YOU PHYSICAL TRAINING CLASS,MAYBE TAKE SOME MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES, I KNOW THEY HAVE WORKED FOR ME, YOU CAN DO WONDERS WITH YOUR HANDS, GOING AGAINST 300 INMATES, THERE IS NO CHANCE EVEN IF YOU USED A LETHAL WEAPON, SOMEONE IS BOUND TO LOOSE, AND I THINK YOU CAN FIGURE THAT OUT FOR YOURSELF, WHY TO THEY HAVE 1 OFFICER TO 300 INMATES. IN OHIO THERE HAS TO BE AT LEAST 2 -PER 100 PRISON INMATES

Training varies from agency to agency, but would it hurt you to have one more item in your 'toolbox?'

Our facility is only 3 months old. They had originally hired enough officers to cover the facility but we have had a lot of people leave. There is always supposed to be at least two officers per unit sometimes we get lucky and have three

There are foggers and rubber ball grenades in our central control. At the time of a man down activation we have out ERT team respond but even that has a three to four minute response time.

Do you work for a private facility? I have never heard of an agency not letting their COs carry handcuffs or oc.

Do you have a union. Safety issues are union issues!

Yes it is private. When I first started I had no idea how different it was from State operated.

Anything is better than nothing but being the ERT team is not even trained to use these devices would have to wait for somone who is qualified to use it. Our ERT team is only C/0's. They are really only meant to suit up for cell extractions and operationg extinguisher or video camera.

the best thing to think about is what do you have for protection ..right now.
our corrections officers are required to wear protective vests. and they dont carry anything but a baton.
i know that it's more than you may have now, but at any moment those items can be taken away and used as a weapon against you. just stay physically fit. and mentally alert.....stay safe.

Have you talked to the administration about setting up some certification courses, so everyone can qualify to operate the less lethal weapons?

YOU KNOW THOUGH, I THINK THAT ALL CORECTIONS OFFICER SHOULD HAVE TO BE TRAINED IN FIREARMS, TACTIAL TRAINING AND SO FORTH, THEY ARE DEALING WITH THE INMATES MORE THEN WE DO, THEY SHOULD BE TRAINED JUST LIKE US.....

The funny thing is that we are firearms certified. They also put us through defensive tactics.

CSMICE, YOU KNOW THOUGH EVEN WERAING PROTECTIVE GEAR THESE CRAZIES WILL GO AFTER ANYTHING, MAIN ARTERIES IN YOUR LEG, ETC, SO NO MATTER WHAT TRAINING GEAR YOU HAVE ON, YEA IT IS PROTECTION, BUT A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE, WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD WHEN HE WENT ON A DOMESTIC CALL, WHICH ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS CALL, I THINK. WHERE WAS HIS PROTECTION ON HIS CHEST.
