I have a question pertaining to officers who do the bare minimum required of them. Many departments have minimum requirements or expectations they have for their officers. This helps gauge the activity of the officer and is reflected on their evaluations. My question is how do you motivate the officer who does nothing more than what is required. They never go above and beyond and I think they don't care. Also it seems these officers never volunteer for extra duties, such as FTO, CST, etc... How can we motivate them???

I have a suggestion that has seemed to work for me. First of all, let me preface this statement. Though we cannot FORCE anyone to raise their activity levels, I have found that being the example is paramount in influencing others in my department to become more pro-active. I would recommend starting small. Begin with your immediate shift. First step...look for other pro-active individuals on your shift to back up your efforts. Next, Initiate shift meetings, excluding your supervisor(s), with your comrads addressing areas where you would like to see improvement on the shift. Make them feel like they are part of a team. On one shift I was involved with, we even made it competative to be proactive. After having a "successful week", we would meet off-duty to play cards or something to that effect to solidify our unity as a team. MOST IMPORTANTLY....nip the gossip in the bud! Always speak about your shift as if it's the best shift on the department. Even if deep down inside you don't believe this, it's amazing how something as simple as our speech can change the course of someone's actions and attitudes. Prime example: if you tell a child s/he is useless and will never amount to anything, there's a good chance it will happen. If you praise kids and speak positively into their lives, they have a much better chance of turning out "better". I encourage you to never give up. It can certainly be discouraging at times, but you overcoming these obstacles are sure to eventually have a positive influence on those around you. God bless and be safe!

I will agree that positive influence and statements boost morale. R u suggesting perhaps there should be no negative consequences and to work on buillding shift cammraderie? Everyone gets along but when it is time to go home everyone bolts. When I first started there were a ton of shift parties, but it seems like people are more disgruntled and about self preservation.

I strongly believe there should be consequences, but that should be the responsibility of your shift supervisor(s). I am assuming you are not a supervisor (I could certainly be wrong). I would strongly encourage you to work your way up the ranks in order to implement change in the "way your department does business". This profession needs some pro-active supervisors! If you are not interested in supervisor work, consider becoming a f.t.o. if your aren't one already. You can help influence people one person at a time. I have spent over half my career training new hires. Sometimes my advise sinks in; sometimes it doesn't. You can lead a horse to water......you know the rest.

When all is said and done, I am proud to know that I can walk up to my boss and look him in the eye when I get my paycheck. Unfortunately, you will always have others who tend to "back in" knowing they haven't "earned" their wages. I have always and will always give my bestl. It benefits me, others around me and the community I serve and protect.
