Has anyone been involved in officer involved shootings? If so, can you provide any suggestions on what you would have done differently in hindsight?

Sir, with all due respect, this is an extremely hard question to answer in a public forum. My wife and I have both been involved in shootings and we decided there's no safe way to answer it.....either way we go with this, it will sound bad to non-police due to them not understanding and/or being able to relate to a situation that almost took our lives...Very good question, but also very hard to answer on computer....if you were right next to me in person, no problem....

I have been involved in 4...all equally traumatic in thier own right. very difficult question to answer. always things that can be done different. it is difficult for an officer to go back and say what one could have done differently, because just surviving the unfortunate tragic event is enough...to go back and second guess is tough, but once you get past all that, you can always find ways to improve and not make the same mistakes...they may not have even been mistakes...just areas for improvement.
be safe!

I think any officer involved shooting should be critiqued. Not criticized, but critiqued. If there is something to be learned that will keep the next cop safer, then great. If the officer did everything right, even better. I know that it sounds like second guessing, but I don't see it that way. We need to learn from each other.

How can you second guess a decision that you had a millisecond to decide. You can't. If you feel there is danger to life and limb, you do what you have to do. There can be no second guessing, especially from the cop bashers, politicians, brass and the unruly citizens that weren't even there. Cops do not go out there and say, I think I'll shoot someone today. They are faced with a deadly situation in which they must make a decision. And when they do, it affects them for a long time after. They do have a consience. And nobody should have the gall to question them. I'm all for critique, as a training tool, and that's as far as it goes. Be safe everyone.

Not here, not now, not ever in this non-secure, nonconfidential, very public, anyone-with-an-email-address, open to any scroat, no screening open forum. Guys, unless you are willing to print your thread to this discussion and send it to your local paper's Opinion Page and talk openly about your OIS, I would not recommend any discussion here regarding any OIS in which you've been involved. Remember your POBR.

Very true...
