| Posted about 1 year ago I am simply looking to get an idea on the road to becoming an LEO what different departments issue, this way I can get a sense of what equipment I can expect. I am only familiar with a few families of weapons, for example, and this would give me an idea of what to look into. If you feel that this is an officer safety issue, please feel free to give a guarded response. Sorry AZ, I didn't think this would be an "Ask A Cop" article, my fault. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Depends on the department. You may get outfitted from head to toe, or you may have to provide it ALL yourself, or it may be somewhere in between. There's really no way to definitively answer since each dept is different. As to side arms, you may see anything from 9mm to .45. 9mm, .40 and .45 are most common, but one dept in my area uses the Sig .357 caliber. Glock claims to be the issue pistol of more departments than any other gun. At least that was what they said when I went through their armorers' course a few years back. | Posted about 1 year ago The NYPD issues your service weapon, shield, and vest. You pay for everything else. They even charge 25 cents for the pin that holds your shield on your shirt!! |

| Posted about 1 year ago I really have to find a place to rent and practice with a Glock, I have only fired one Glock. Anyone have a suggestion on a general model? The weapon systems I am most familiar with as far as handguns go: 1911s, Beretta 92/96/98 (but I hate them), SiG P226/228, and GP35s. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Beretta 98? what is that? Where can you rent a gun? Do you have to have some kind of special gun renting insurance? Holy crap I could have saved over 30K if I knew you could rent guns... Everything you do can get you killed, including doing nothing at all.. |

" Yes, i'd like to rent the Uzi 9mm". Sure thing Sir!, and how long will you be needing this Uzi? "OH, ya know, just for about 3 days, heh, yeah I gotta travel up state and dont want those darn hoodies to bust a cap in my rump" Ah, I understand Sir, please fill out this insurance form and would you like to purchase some ammo with that day sir? That would be such a great idea!! Everything you do can get you killed, including doing nothing at all.. |

| Posted about 1 year ago well i thought there were places you could test one out before you purchased it. maybe fire a few rounds through it. but havent heard of gun rentals. that would sure put a damper on a case with a specific weapon. rent, murder, return to store i dont think would work. | Posted about 1 year ago No, certain ranges let you rent a gun for use at the range. You pay a fee to use the gun for the day and you buy the ammunition. A Beretta 98 is the variant chambered for 9x21mm. It really is only found over in Europe, as the caliber isn't really popular here in the US. There is also a Beretta 99, chambered for 7.65 Luger, another European caliber. |

| Posted about 1 year ago My department issues H&K 40 USP Compacts. I don't like the H&K all that well, so I carry my own Glock 22 on duty and a Glock 23C off duty and for special details. We are responsible for our boots & leather gear. All uniforms are furnished. |

| Posted about 1 year ago Naber said: The NYPD runs its own equipment shop at headquarters where they stock only department approved items from department approved vendors. There are other shops around the city and suburbs that have the same stuff and more, but charge a whole lot more money. Sometimes it is worth it to pay the extra money at the other shops, just so you don't have to travel all the way into Manhattan. |

You NYPD officers sure do put up with a lot of stuff from the higher-ups, and then have to deal with the serious street vermin. I figure it is easier to deal with the street vermin. Stay safe, my friend. |
