I was a 2200 to 0600 for 10 yrs when I switched over to day shift I noticed that I started getting skin color :) I still at times feel like I have to be up all night... what I would do was get off at 0600 and go home and "nap" til around 10 then get up do errands til around 1400 and then sleep til 2000 then up and get ready for work... was hard to change all that to start working days around "normal" people :)

oh if I was off the following night i.e. working now and off thursday night..... I would sleep all day wednesday (sleeping pills) then stay up all night long until at least noon on thursday take two hour nap and back up and just force myself to stay awake so I could sleep that night :) and if that didnt work I would just watch tv til it went off the air :) and yes I am old enough to remember when the tv went off the air and there was no such thing as infomercials

I've been working nights for the past 2 years. My ex girlfriend decided to break up with me since we couldn't really see each other most of the time. The time i would spent with her and the kids I would get called out.

Narco4c75 that sucks. When I met my husband he was working nights too. At that time it worked out. But he got promoted to Sgt. and works mostly days now. I find it hard to sleep next to him when I have days off.

i know waht you mean. When I would see my girlfriend I would asker "who are you" I know I go to bed with someone but when I wake up she is no longer there. Of course she would tell me to shut up. But on the serious side. I miss her and the kids. Especially my little turkey. My little girl. But it is one of the great sacrifices in this job. I love this job.

I bet you do miss your youngens. I couldn't imagine my life now without my snuggle bunny. My hubby and I tried so long for him 8 miscarriages and 1 etopic later he came. I am blessed to have him. But I see even less of my hubby and miss him alot these days. Seems like we fight a little more since our son came into the world. Over little things but fight none the less. I love my job. He has been a police officer for 8 years but has decided to get out. He loves his job but just can't stand his department anymore. He has decided to be a full time fire fighter now and he will be working 24 hour shifts. Think I will see him even less.

I am adjusting to being a mom. But if I have something to do during the day it works for me it forces me to stay awake and I make it through the day. For now I sleep when he sleeps. It works. Some days not so much but for now it is.

When I got offered a job last year working narcotics I had to think twice. I didn;t want to put them in any danger. Especially my little turkey. That even made it hard on me.

I don't envy your job. I would have been a nervous wreck if Joe (my hubby) was interested in Narcotics. You guys have such a dangerous and important job. I personally thank you for the work you do. What area do you hail from?

I worked in west texas as highway interdiction I was the k9 officer. Most of our clients at the narcotics division came from mexico. My ex girlfriend and I would take the kids to El Paso, TX to visit my family and the Malls. we lived 3 hours from there and it was the only major town around us. One day, we were at the mall. Dorothy (exgirlfriend) was getting her nails done and I had my little turkey with me and we went to get a fountain drink at the mall. As luck would have it, I bummped into a guy that i arrrested 3 days earlier for POM. It was scary not for seeing him but becasue I had my little girl with me. I didn;t want her to get hurt. He looked at me and he walked away. I always carried my weapon with me but I was careful were we went. I didnt want to put them in harms way.

Night shifter for 13 years. Went on day work for 7 -8 months last year and hated it. Went right back to nights when there was an opening. I love it here. Its where I belong. You will get used to it. I sleep great during the day, unless my neighbor mows his grass. He loves to cut the grass......3x's a week sometimes.

Narco, I used to get on my hubby for not having my picture in his commission. And one day when I asked him how come? He said I don't want some puke knowing who means so much to me and putting you out there. I said sorry and thank you babe. His department requires he carries his DL but he doesn't until inspection day I asked why and he said if they get my ID then they know where my home and family is. Enough said babe!
GB I myself love football season and am estatic it is getting ready to kick off!! Loyal 49er fan but lean years of late!!

I just took on the 3rd shift about 9 weeks ago, and I cant stand it. I get home by 8am sleep for two hours and then I have to get up and take care of the kids because my wife is on her way to work. I think ill go back to 3-11 if I get the chance.

Its like working a double, except taking care of the kids is a lot more work.

I have the relief shift which means one day shift, then 2 evening shifts and then finally 2 night shifts. Its a killer on your system. Right now I'm on my 2nd night shift and when I get off I have my 2 days off.

I'm also a 3rd shifter. I work from 2000 hrs. to 0600 hrs. I will usually sleep from about 0630 hrs. to 1330 hrs. I like the 3rd shift better and it works out better with the family life for me.

Well I'm hoping and praying that the day shift dispatcher gets the open position as warrans clerk (I put in for it too but she'll beat me out of it) so that I can get her shift. I'm next in line for it. I'm dying to work a "normal" shift. Say a prayer for me!!!

Like narco33gal, I too have worked shifts like that in another profession and it does take a toll on you mentally and physically. Your body doesn't know if you are coming or going that's why I had to get out of it, plus for other reasons. I feel for anyone who works those kind of shifts; they are horrid.
