| Posted about 6 years ago I have a question about badges and patches. An officer told me he thinks there is a law - possibly just in Michigan - that prohibits civilians from possessing or collecting patches. He's not sure if that is a law or not - but wondering if anyone else heard this. |

| Posted about 6 years ago Illinois just came up with a super strict law that prohibits EVERYONE - even active officers - from possessing current style badges from any agency other their own. A few bad apples can ruin a hobby for everyone. Chris Cosgriff

| Posted about 6 years ago The laws do vary from state to state...In Florida, it's the intent that makes the possession a crime. It's a subjective word that leaves many questions. |

| Posted about 6 years ago The laws defining badge collecting are found below, and I would assume that patches are the same. It is really a fun hobby and a great way to meet other officers. IT IS ILLEGAL TO POSSESS A FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT BADGE IN THE USA REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DO FOR A LIVING. THE ONLY LEGAL POSSESSION OF A FEDERAL BADGE IS BY THE MEMBER OF THE SPECIFIC SERVICE TO WHOM THE BADGE WAS ISSUED. THERE ARE NO EXEMPTIONS UNDER THE LAW FOR FEDERAL BADGES.

| Posted almost 7 years ago I was referring only to Florida state law, not Federal. I don't think I have any Illinois patches. Maybe I should check and flush them down the toilet before the search warrant is executed! |

| Posted almost 6 years ago Illinois patches are OK but badges are not according to law in IL you can only have your own dept's badge I spoke with a lot officer in the metro area here and found only 2 guys who said they would enforce the law most of them didnt know it was a law in IL on badges. So what I did most of the IL badges I have I called up the PD and had them write a letter stating that I'm allowed to have them just in case. |

| Posted almost 6 years ago Wow, I learned something new today. I always thought it was against the law to have any type of police badge; unless it is issued to you... As far as patches can we have any of them if we are not a LEO? “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”
