I just posted an article about the resurgence of the traditional Black & White police cars and thought it very interesting. I would like to know what you thought of the idea about going back to the traditional colors of black & white or even dark blue & white. What color units does your department have? In San Diego we had solid white with gold & black lettering and in Greenville we had solid white with blue & white lettering. The county had a silver & black. The State of SC has a silver blue with blue lettering and stripes and it is illegal in that state to paint a vehicle that color! Where I am now the city has a dk. blue & white with gold lettering and the county is typical Fl being white with green lettering and stripes. Of course the FHP has that gaudy looking Black & Yellow!

In Britain, we used to have quite a few different colours. We used to have white, with a red horizontal stripe, aka jam/jelly sandwich, for highway patrol cars. City cars used to be either, solid pale blue, pale blue and white, or solid dark blue. Now nearly all the cars are mainly white, with a broad horizontal chequered band, in reflective yelow and blue. But we use many different types of cars, depending on the area of the country. And they all have there own crest on the side, depending on which county they come from.

All police should have the black and whites. It looks intimidating and adds the the officer's own personal officer presence in any situation. People see it and know what it means. People shouldn't see a police car and have to look harder to discern that it really is a police car. Shame on any department that so poorly portrays itself.

gray patrol cars with blue stripes....unique for TN as most are green and white SO units. CID and other units have citizen cars equipped out. They range from SUV to anything.

The British units are very bright and hard to mistake for anything but emergency units! I think I would have liked to have had a Black & White patrol unit. Especially the new Dodge Chargers with those LED lights! The lighting on today's units are simply awesome compared to what they were 30 years ago. The only B&W unit I ever drove was my Motorcycle and they came painted like that! I would like to think that if I had those LED lights on it like they do now I might still be active or just retiring after a very long service. Those two flashing blue headlights in the faring and that little teardrop rotating light behind me with a parking lamp bulb in it just didn't put out much light.

I think the old black and white ones look cool. I don't think law enforcement vehicles should be all colorful and stand out because then everyone could see you from a mile away and have plenty of time to stop what they're doing and/or run.

FHP's colors of their cars are supose to help them blend into their enviroment. The black and cream paint scheme is actually camouflage to help the vehicle blend in with the road surface (black) and parched grass medians (cream). The Florida Highway Patrol is the WORST division of law enforcement in the US. they lie, discriminate agaist Veterans, and typically dont have a clue what they are doing(maybe thats why they painted their cars an odd color--they didnt have a clue to what they where doing.)

My dept. has B&W, the county has B&W, and now two other agencies close by have exactly copied ours cars and the lettering on the side! Only difference is the name of the city! With the New Chief in Austin (who is from LA) is now changing their cars to B&W!!!

Our chief's car was a brown oldsmobile with a big red light in the front windshield (looked like the one that they would hold out of the window on dragnet) our cars were white fairmonts with two big round red lights (you know the ones that would spin faster when you would speed up and slow down when you stopped the car) and a big speaker in the center of the light bar. Eventually upgrated to light blue LTD's with white strips. Now they have white caprice with the led lights.

Black and white here for as long as anyone can remember. Now, here's the cool question? How about those old 5 litre Mustangs, awesome Camaros and the new Chargers all in black and white. Man, please pass me one of those....

Our marked units are white with black and gold graphics. My department went with the white, as someone else said, to be different. All the municipal agencies in our area have the black and whites. My own patrol car is just a plain, white unmarked Crown Vic. At least I managed to keep a cage in my car though which is more then I can say for the other supervisors.
