Posted over 2 years ago Scenerio - You are working at the Jail/Prison and a prisoner that is talking on the telephone calls you over and says, "Hey Officer come close enough so noone hears our conversation" he then says, "Alright, right now I have my BOYZ on the other line. They have your wife and kids in their vehicle and has them at gun point. You make one false move and they get shot in the head." (you confirm that your wife and kids are in their custody waiting outside in the Jail visitors parking LOT)
WHAT WOULD YOU DO? (they say never give up your uniform.) |

| Posted over 2 years ago do whatever they say to save your family. Jails have more cameras around than a hollywood movie set. They'll be caught by the boys in blue! And that "buddy" on the inside, on the phone, well - he should be charged with stupidity. He gets a kidnapping rap along with whatever else AND he doesnt get to escape. |

| Posted over 2 years ago Is this reality or are you letting your imagination run wild? Either way its a no brainer. You save your family. Just curious though because I have never heard this story. |

| Posted over 2 years ago There are sooooo many variables involved......first of all, the security in a sallyport entering and leaving a facility should prevent this scenario from ever happening.....secondly, I know my facility has a cruiser that checks every vehicle that comes into the parking lot, name, license of all occupants, etc, etc....you need to trust the security at your facility.........I would also use my IPC skills to try to talk to this inmate to diffuse this situation because in my honest opinion, only the most desperate inmate would attempt this and my wife and kids would probably be killed whether I gave up the uniform or not. That is just plain reality. Kyle313

| Posted over 2 years ago we had a situation in a jail I worked as an intern in FL. I had actually been involved with a SWAT raid to grab two 15 yo identical twins who had been breaking into pawn shops through the roof and stealing guns. These guns were turning up in homicides and other crimes. Anyway, these guys were only 15, but they were nasty. We arrested them, and a month later they beat up an officer while getting ready for pretrial release, escaped custody, and were recaptured a few days later trying to steal a taxi outside of the airport in Atlanta, GA. Anything can happen. |

| Posted over 2 years ago Yes, I agree that anything can happen. I have been working behind the walls now for going on 10 years with two different agencies and I see new things and learn new things every day. Not a day goes by that an inmate doesn't try to get one over on me, and I'll be the first to admit that I don't see everything or catch everything and yes, sometimes they get the best of me. I realize that not every facility is run the same or has the same policy/procedure for security in place. I do know from my own experience that no gate/door to the outside is ever unlocked without the person in the vestiblue being properly identified by photo id. I also know that if the officer in central control doesn't see me on the camera in cell block and I don't answer the radio call or the phone, the cavalry will come looking for me.....so in the amount of time it takes for me to change clothes in a closet or cell with this inmate, I'm off camera....soooo, not that it can't happen, but there is alot of things inplace to prevent this sort of thing........my thought about saving my family wouldn't be giving up the uniform, it would be the inmate getting out because I know he wouldn't.....even if my family was held hostage, no other officer is going to risk his/her job and let this inmate out........policy states that officers don't let inmates out even in hostage situation....if the gun was pointed at my head and I told them to open the gate, my fellow officers wouldn't open it...I'd probably be shanked or shot........it sucks but its reality. We can play the "what if" game all day long....no one knows how they will act unless actually put into that situation. Like I said, I could give up the uniform, but it doesn't necessarily save my family. It's never that simple....Even if the inmate did make it out......do you think he would actually release your family....maybe....after he had his way with them...maybe not....I've been lied to by inmates enough to know that just because I give up the uniform and he gets out doesn't mean my family if off the hook. I'm a realist and that is how I view this situation. I apologize if I'm reading too deep into this question, but I know what my policy is, and the actual chance of an inmate walking out under these circumstances. Kyle313

| Posted over 2 years ago certainly family comes first, but in my perception after Releasing, the prisoner might kill or kidnapped our family , for furture Guilty verdict. in that situation what should be our action? |
