I'm currently working on my bachelor's in Criminology. Considering getting my doctorate but wondering what path to take. I know the FBI requires LE or military experience. Do you think it would be wiser to start a career in LE after my bachelor's and continue schooling, or wait until I finish my doctorate and start from there? Anyone advice would be appreciated.

I say get experience and work on your doctorate at the same time. Book smarts are great but you don't want to over market yourself with no on the job experience and such a high degree. Good for you though!!!!

thanks. That's more the path I'm thinking of as well. Anymore it doesn't seem like a doctorate is worth any more than a bachelor's unless youre teaching at a university or dealing with the sciences.

Diversify your education, FBI likes lawyers and accountants more so than cops

that's what I have heard. I thought maybe speaking more than two languages may help as well. I have completed two semesters of Spanish and need two more. I also plan on taking Arabic and am learning Hebrew. I was also looking into DCI instead of the FBI. It seems a lot like the FBI but more at the state level.

Oh please they will be knocking down your door. Get some experience. A doctorate is helpful if you ever want to be a chief somewhere too. Just food for thought.

I have a BS in Criminal Justice and minors in Sociology and Pre Law. To be honest, I know perfectly well that my years of education are not going to help me on the street, but so many agencies (fed. and state) require AT LEAST 2 years of higher ed. If you want to have any hope of setting yourself apart from the rest of the applicants you have to go for 4 even for these...pretty soon the rookie beat cop will need a doctorate just to have a chance for employment. Sad.

it is sad. what is even sadder is the amount of debt I'll be in after getting a doctorate.
