Crombie, you are absolutely right.

By law, the US Flag can only be flown at half mast by order of the President. If you look at the 5 times when the flag is flown at half staff BY LAW; we as police officers are in pretty good company.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15th / Memorial Day, last Monday in May (Flag raised to full staff at noon) / Korean War Veterans Day, July 27th / Patriot Day, September 11th / Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, December 7th.

A historical piece for those that don't know: In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 into effect, designating May 15th Peace Officer's Memorial Day, "in honor of the Federal, State, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. In 1994, President Clinton (whether you like him or not) signed Public Law 103-322 into effect, which directs that the flag of the United States on all Government buildings be displayed at half-staff on May 15, National Peace Officers' Memorial Day.

Let’s be proud of this, it is our responsibility to remember those that have died in the line of duty.
