Greetings,

I was curious about what folks thought about the PR-24 vs. the expandable baton both as an offensive and defensive tool?

Personally, I liked the PR-24 more as a defensive tool, where as I feel the expandable baton is superior as an offensive tool.

Thoughts?

I prefer the expandable PR-24 as I believe the side handle is the difference offensively and defensively

Expandable is better. My PR-24 was always in the car, where it was useless. The ASP is right where it should be all the time, with me.

I noticed that the Reno PD utilizes the expandable PR-24. Very nice. Looks a little different on the hip though.

I prefer the expandable baton. Useful in close quarters when not expanded. I would not go anywhere without my ASP expandable baton. I have the 16" and the 31" versions

I ended up giving my ASP to my girlfriend.

In my experience the expandable ASP is ineffective. I know that ringing a baton everytime you get out of the car is a pain but it is like anything else. It is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I watched an officer walk over to a trash can and throw his ASP away after a long and protracted altercation with a suspect. He swore he would never ever carry another ASP.

I will never carry an expandable straight baton again after going through PR-24 trianing. I have an expandable PR that I carry every day on my belt. Not only is it a superior weapon in comparison to a regular baton, it also has a psycological effect on suspects that just see it on your belt. They see the "nightstick" and think "I REALLY dont want to get hit with that thing!" Suspects have told me that 100 times that they would have fought but they were afraid of "the stick" on my belt. Do yourself a favor and get eduacated with your PR before you retire it to your trunk or closet. Check out the review of the PR 24 in the gear section of the site.

Currently I have the expandable PR-24 and I would have to say that I would much rather carry and ASP by far.. The PR-24 is a great tool but with all the equipment that is carried on the duty belt it seems to stay in the car or office.

pr-24 is the king! Agencies dont like them b/c of the intimidation they give citizens. Thugs dont like um b/c they will kick their but. Everyone I knew use to carry them until agencies saw a certain video and they just withered away, around here anyways.

I prefer pr-24 anyday. I have used the asp with little or no affect. The pr-24 on the other hand is lightening in a stick. The site alone is intimidating, but once a turd gets nailed with it, their leg feels like one of Barry Bonds homerun baseballs.

ditto, all departments in my area carry the ASP, its with you at all times. Recent training articles have expressed how rarely an impact weapon is used. The Rodney King mantra the idea of being close and striking someone Col. Grossman and the advent of the tazer seem to have really lessened the chance a baton will be employed

I wish we could have the asp, even a taser would be nice. That would have helped me out a great deal with an idiot I chased on foot for a mile about 2 weeks ago. My PR-24 stays in the car also. Only that is my fault for it not being affective. I tell fellow officers when they ask why we don't care tasers or asp this.... " Our policy is comply or die." Sad thing is that I should say the truth. "Our Dept is too scared to get sued by people so they rather risk our lives for the state's money." Just my opinion.

Generally my OC is deployed if I have to use an intermidiate weapon, but most of the time body manipulation to the ground works (and not pressure points).

Though between the 2 I prefer the ASP. I can easily retrieve it from my belt, and use it either closed or extended. PR-24's you have to un ring which honestly could turn bad on you if you need it in an enclosed space. Plus people saying the asp is in effective probably never used it for a real knock down drag out fight, becuase if you ever use the asp it generally breaks what it hits.

Though I would say most of us use the impact weapons more for extracting entrapped people from wreaks, and great door knockers.

Its easier to to draw a fixed baton (whether a straight stick or a side handle) than to draw and expand an expandable, especially in tight spaces.  At fixed baton won't collapse or bend after repeated strikes.  An expandable baton is like a handgun.  Its not the best tool for the job but you can always have it with you.  Anyone that says a fixed baton is ineffective probably never used in a real knock down drag out fight one or really been trained on the proper use of one.

I use a straight stick and a monadnock expandable

While I've been trained and used both types, I always preferred the PR24. It gave me more options than the ASP. I use the ASP primarily as a low profile tool during protective assignments.
