OK here is the situation.

I recently applied for a job with a different department that would have equaled about a 12000 dollar a year raise from what I am currently doing. I have been at my current job for about 8 years. I am a detective in a very busy part of town in the suburbs of St Louis. before this I worked in another city where my work history was impecable, but here is the history at this job. (This is no lie and not exagerated) I started this position in the city which I lived in. After 6 mo on the job I was approached to take the k9 position, which I accepted. There was a seargent that was quite pissed because he wanted it, but regulations stated that a seargent could not hold this postition. Anyway I was in the k9 academy for about 5 months then hit the road with my dog. He was already 5 years old when I got him(long story) so he was 6 when we hit the streets. Well this seargent and one of the Lts decided that they did not like the cheif because of this. The started a mini coup and had about 80% of the guys perform a work stoppage for about 6 months until the city manager demoted the chief down to major and the city manager took control of the police department. Things went well for about 2 years. August of 99 there was an incident which I was framed on a call and was later proven in a civil service board hearing and was cleared. By this time the department had ceased all k9 activities because the k9 car broke down(it was 8 years old and had 200000 miles) and they would not replace it. Due to the above incident and the fact that I was beind ordered to stop black people after dark I decided that I did not want to work there any longer so I went back and accepted a job with my previous employer, where I am now. When I left the city owed me about 200 hours of overtime and my dog was now 8 1/2. The city asked for the dog back so that they could put him down and get another. I refused and placed a restraining order to keep the dog for kenneling services that I was not paid while the dog was not working. I offered to give my overtime in payment and the city refused. Somehow this news got hold of this and the city went on TV and said that they wanted to put the dog down and that started an outcry. Someone donated 10000 so that I could keep the dog. (yeah i know, how awsome) The city got a new dog out of the deal and I got to keep my dog.

Now the hard part. My work history for 20 years has been impecable except for this period. Due to economics I have found that I need to leave where I am. I do not even break 40,000. a year with 15 years service. I had an oportunity to go to another department for about a 12000 year raise. Guess what. The prospective employer got ahold of that old seargent, who is now a LT where all previous employment prospects go for information. Now I am finding out that untruthful information is beind deciminated about me, and information about closed files are being divuldged. Needless to say I lost the job. Being on the Major Case Squad and a part of my current departmental background process I was able to gain information about what was said. I will not be able to use my source as that would break confidentiality with the guys I know.

I have no intentions to sue or make accusations due to not being able to reveal my source, and I have contacted an attorney. My question is what do I do now and how do I stop the slander without proof. As a background investigator I would not divulge my information either. There are laws which limit the amount of info by law, but we all know these are not followed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not the one to answer this question, but I'm posting to bump it up, so more people will notice it.

I understand what you say about protecting the confidentiality of your source, but I am wondering if you can do a little investigation of your own. Enlist the help of another agency-- whoever you properly go to with a legal complaint against the offending agency. Tell them what you fear is going on. Put in an application for that agency, and have them send for the references. When the information comes, have them look it over and doublecheck claims with you. If they are slandering you, the agency is the one that would now have evidence.

I don't know if that would be legal-- your lawyer could tell you this, I am sure.

Damn. Uh, I'm too much of a rook to give some real info but Im really bothered by that too. That's totally not fair. I hate how people carry grudges and can destroy others' chances at better lives just because ... :(

Caninekopz, Do you have all of the paperwork clearing you of wrongdoing? Do you maintain your evaluations? Have you dealt with this issue internally with someone higher up whom you trust?

Yes,

I have a very good understanding with the city manager who when asked, gave me a good recomendation. My problem is that when others, who had nothing to do with my situation other than they were pissed because they did not get the dog, are badmouthing me and allowing sealed information to be leaked. I am taking steps with an attorney as we speak. I was very frustrated friday night and needed to vent. But any help would be appreciated. There is so much that I haven't relayed in the small post that I wrote. I am man enough to stand up when I have done wrong, but this is not the case.
