When I turn 20 I will hopefully be joining the local police department, however, not only am I a female, I am a SMALL framed female. What sort of discrimination should I be prepared for if[and when] I succeed at completing my training??

in the academy they will try to break you, to prove your worth. I am tall and lean. I went through it years ago and it is still an issue

None, and i hope they put you with a female that is just smaller than you , then give you a hot call with a gang of thugs fighting in the streets, tell you to break it up. then you might come to realize the difference between discrimination and reality.
would you prefer having someone your size being your only back up or a big old guy with a poor out look on the felons..for myself i dont really care how big my back up is, but it is taking more and more officers than it use to.
if your dad was in a fight for his life and could have one person only for help who would you send a female your size or the biggest one you can find, and don't say you, because in law enforcement it can't be personal.

I'm in the academy right now and we have several women in my class that are small (between 4'11" and 5'3"). I can tell you the exact reason that they got in: they didn't think like you. Exactly as ODIN wrote, there's quite a difference between discrimination and a reality check. Any of those women I'd be more than willing to have respond as my backup because I know that they didn't go into the hiring process thinking, "Woe is me...." And the discrimination that you're going to face *IF* you complete your training? There're two bad thoughts in that line: the first is the word *IF*. I don't want anyone standing next to me come next week that is having the word "IF" floating around in their head. The second is the concept of discrimination once you get out on the street. You're going to have people pissed at you, hating you, not wanting to be around you...but it won't be the people who share the uniform that you wear, unless you're still carrying this concept of discrimination due to height. The only advice I'll give you: drop that word from your vocabulary when it comes to this job, as none of your fellow officers will want to hear it coming out of your mouth (as it directly implies that THEY are treating you differently).

The guys are right if you are going to do the job, you must get with the program. I choose not to be a cop. Police Administrator or Parole Officr anything but not a cop. However if I wanted to be a cop my attitude would be female RAMBO. (lol) O excuse me I'm from the hood. Read the story about David & the sling shot as a reminder of what you can do and remember police officer's operate under Team Dynamic's. There are women, I have worked with in Administration that I could not take into battle. They are my friends on the side line but when its time for war I can't take them on the front line with me they will get me killed. (lol)

Clmitchem, don't get your feathers ruffled by the comments. #1 you will need thick skin, because this job has no room for babies, that will cry when their nail gets broken. #2 I'm female and 5'1 and I never let anyone tell me I couldn't do something. I don't know if you are these type of females, but nothing pisses me off more then haveing a female that doesn't like to get dirty and get a scrape or bruise. You need to ask yourself if you will be able or willing to jump in to a pile of guys that are kicking eachother's a$$, or will you wait until your fellow male officers arrive to take care of it. If you are scared of getting hurt than don't waste your time or this career and find some other profession. This isn't meant to be mean just giving you a small hint of what this job will ask of you and your size and sex have nothing to do with it. Trust me people on the street regardless if it's male/female they won't see you as a small framed female they will see you as a Cop who is taking them to jail and they will try to hurt you. Look at the video of the female officer getting her a$$ kicked by a person she pulled over.

This is not just with the LEO's out there,, I am 5' 2.. 118 lb... and work construction / roofing..
working with crews of guys daily,,,
There is not one thing any of them can do that I can't / won't do..
In the construction field like any other basically male dominated field there are reasons for it..
don't kid yourself for a minute...you have to be at the least equal or better.
I earn respect on a daily basis, the first thing you get by most of these guy's is sized up,,,,...ha....yea...
you go boy..
and then let me show you the easy way to accomplish the same results.....
you do make adjustments for not having the same capability for physical strength ,,,as you go along,,, there is not one guy I have worked with for more than a day, who would hesitate to ask of me the same they ask of any other guy on the crew. BUT....
It was up to me to show them I could handle what they could dish out.....

Thank you for your replies. I know that I am going to make it. When I originally posted that, I was having issues at my current job with discrimination. I am not worried about that anymore, actually...I took a HUGE step this morning and joined the USMC. I go to basic in about half a year. I did not mean to make others think that I was worried about whether or not I thought I was not going to be able to make it...I KNOW I am going to, I was just wondering what others might say. And I got my answers, so...thanks...
