I get lots of questions on Florida Police Academies (since I run one just North of Orlando, FL). What is it that you are most curious about concerning the academy in the Sunshine State. I'll try to answer your questions (along with the other posters on PoliceLink) as best that I can.

I have a few if its alright...

Whats the typical chronology of the academies?

How much does it cost to go through?

How much book work on average is there say per day?

I'm trying to get hired up in the tallahasee area but man, none of the departments around there want to sponsory rookies through the academy. i'm going to apply at wakulla sheriff...wish me luck.

Nope, most agencies will not sponsor people. I first started with Monroe County as a corrections officer. They paid for the academy because they were hurting for personnel. But, the crossover, I had to pay for myself. I work for the state and they will pay for your training, but the pay sucks. TPD is hard to get into if you don't have a two degree and they stay busy. I use to live just south of Woodville near Wakulla Station. There is a lot of nepotism going on within that agency. Good luck.

I live in south florida at the moment, and the majority of departments down here sponsor you through the academy at a good percentage. Fort Lauderdale is paying $700 a week for the academy with a two year committment!

Can you elaborate on your opinions on Wakulla before I get myself locked up in that department??

Have you tried palm beach I did an internship there, but they had around 6-10 officers graduate the academy half way through my internship so I did not get hired, but they have listed 5 more openings. I'm waiting on a federal le application, so I have not put back in yet for the local level.

There are a ton of places in Tallahassee as far as law enforcement goes, but I think TPD is the only one that sponsors. LCSO doesn't and the other agencies are on the smaller side, so I don't think they can afford to sponsor people. If you can find a way to pay for the academy, FSUPD will pay for you education and if you ever plan on having kids, they pay for their education as well (assuming they attend FSU). FAMU might be the same way. I know people who work for Capitol Police because it allows them to easily take classes at FSU.

If you are looking for a civilian job with a law enforcement agency, again, there are a bunch in Tallahassee. FDLE, FWC, ABT, Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement are just a few off the top of my head. Alot of the crim majors at FSU work at those places while they are still in school.
