Not really. Krav Maga is a very specific discipline. The defensive tactics you will learn in your academy will suffice. If you want to take it for the simple pleasure of expanding your martial arts resume and getting better in shape, then knock yourself out. (pun intended)

Anytime you can add martial arts to your repertoire, you stand a better chance out here in the jungle, you will learn some in the academy but if you dont train regularly you lose in the fight. martial arts training in a dojo on a regular basis is a great thing to do for many reasons.

Just a little information for those that don't know. Krav Maga is a very special martial arts disipline that was started back sometime I believe in the 1940's. I was first taught to Israeli Defense Force. It very unique in the fact that unlike other forms of martial arts that use for the most part very complex movements to achieve their goal, it is simplicity in itself. The style uses the natural defensive postures and movements that you would make when say someone tries to punch you in the face to turn their movements against them. The original style was somewhat passive in nature but was very easily tuned to be quite lethal. The best part of it is that once you learn it you more than likely won't forget it, unlike other styles like jujitu (which if your intersted is probably the only style other than krav maga that is really geared towars LE type jobs) which take intesive training to maintain your prowess.

"Certainly there is no hunting like the hunting of man, and those who have hunted armed men and liked it never really care for anything else thereafter. You will meet them doing various other things with resolve, but their interest rarely holds because after the other thing ordinary life is as flat as the taste of wine after the taste buds have been burned off your tongue." Devil dog is right. In my opinion, KRAV MAGA is similar to the spear technique. If you can put MMA, KRAV MAGA, and the SPEAR together, you will be good in your stand up and ground work. Pay heavy attention to the ground work, after all, when we get into it where does it end up...exactly....the suspect with a face plant on the ashpalt.

Jiu Jitsu was probably the most beneficial of martial arts I've trained in, submission holds, and if that don't work, ground and pound baby, not that I'm a hater or anything! You have to be ready for anything, get all you can, no mercy.

Krav Maga is a good thing to learn, my husband is an instructor and it is used at his department. It is a tool like all the others you will be carrying. I also agree with Adrenaline Jiu Jitsu is also a good tool, been taking some classes. Alot of the guys I work with are also, so we get extra practice in. Good Luck, and stay safe.

Knowledge of the martial arts is always an asset, but knowing Smith & Wesson beats knowing Kung Fu.

I study aikido and jiu jitsu. It's all very good but in the heat of battle, like adrenaline says, it all comes down to ground and pound. Honestly, are you really gonna be thinking about that arm bar or leg lock when homey the bad guy's going for your gun?

I've had one go for my gun while I was arresting him......I found out he had a glass jaw when he wouldn't move after landing on the ground motionless.

I AGREE W/ WHAT ODIN HAS SAID (TWICE) ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE YOURSELF ABLE TO PROTECT YOURSELF OR YOUR PARTNER IS A GOOD THING JUST DON'T PUNCH REAL HARD TO THE SOLAR PLEXUS, NOR INSERT TWO FINGERS INTO THE ASSAILANT'S EYES. NOT TO MENTION A PUNCH TO THE THROAT. YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO BE DEEMED EXCESSIVE. (ESPECIALLY IF THE SUSPECT WERE GRABBING FOR YOUR WEAPON)
