One of Heckler and &Koch’s many innovations, the HK417 was born and made in the German homeland. A larger twin to the HK416 that used by Special Forces Operational Delta; the 5.56 round is now upgraded to fit a 7.62 x 51 mm NATO round. A .308 Winchester. It has a gas-operated short stroke piston design, which has been claimed to be more reliable than the original direct impingement operation of the AR-10. The latter prototypes utilize a polymer magazine with bolt hold-open. The magazine itself is very similar to the G36 series, its transparent, with the exception of the pins to hold more than one magazine. Used more for a designated marksman than an actual “assault” rifle, it has increased accuracy comes at the price of reduced rate of fire while its cost comes with a larger magazine holding capacity. Coming in three Variants The HK417 12” is more an ‘Assaulter’ model weighs 3.87 kg The HK417 16” is specialized for ‘Recce’ weighs 4.05 kg And the HK417 20” is the ‘Sniper’ model weighs 4.23 The weapon is gas-operated, with a rotating bolt, and has a 10-20 round detachable box magazine.

Though I personally I haven't fired a weapon of this caliber, I've read and watched many shows on that depict the weapon in combative use. Many of the shows and material I've come across, is based on the personal experience from using the weapon. However, reading from the specs and from hearing confirmation of those that have used the weapon, it sounds like a very good rifle.

I've read several reports on both the HK 416 & 417 and saw it being tested on the Military Channel and its seems to be a very good weapon. My only real questions are :
    1. Is it going to available for Individual Officer Purchase
    2. If so, how much?

Our agency uses the Mk 11 Mod 0 system which uses match grade 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition. The Mk 11 (the Stoner SR-25 varient) system includes the rifle, 20 round box magazines, QD scope rings, Leupold Vari-X Mil-dot riflescope, Harris swivel-base bipod on a Knight's mount, and QD sound suppressor, which is also manufactured by Knight's Armament Co. Flip-up back up iron sights are attached to the gas block and upper receiver. Old school, right? But the rifle produces less than an inch moa at 100yds, however it "craps where it eats" so to speak. The gas operated AR system may be a turnoff to some.

I would like to see the Mk11 and the HK go head to head. The short stroke piston design may be the way of the future. Can HK package a complete system and market it to the Feds? We'll see. Just stirring the pot.

The price saying unknown says it all. Try to convince your department to take the amount out of the budget and see what happens.
