My chief went to a conference and returned with this book for each officer. I am over half way thru this book and it's great. I've been policing 14 years or so and I see myself in this book and now realize that they were signs that I should have been more attentive at home. It explains why cops are the way we are at home and at work. It should be required reading for every law enforcement cadet in the academy and at about the 5 year mark they should read it again.

I haven't read too many law enforcement books, but this one is a must-read for all police officers. The author does an excellent job at explaining how much this job truly affects us. It is straight forward, but humorous at the same time. The author talks about the "Magic Chair" we all have at home; the place where we crash, grab the remote control, and tune the rest of the world out. Highly recommended.

Not only is this a good book for Police Officers to read. It's a great book for your spouse to read for a better understanding of the profession.

It was required reading while I was in the academy. Five years later I still refer to the words in this book to keep my in-office stress levels low. Great book. Go pick it up.

A little over a year ago I sat in Dr. Gilmartin's course and watched 200+ Cops faces change in ‘astonishment’ as they came to the realization they were the “Cop” he was talking about.... One of those newly enlightened faces was mine! Dr. Gilmartin is an old school COP who knows firsthand the dread of countless hours of boredom which accompany a few seconds of sheer terror. Dr. Gilmartin addresses the experiences we all face daily and the highs and lows which come with the job. Dr. Gilmartin covers the effects these highs and lows have on our ‘On Duty’ and ‘Off Duty’ lives. Personally, Dr. Gilmartin’s course / book saved my marriage, my family, and my career. I realized many of the problems in my life where caused by my reaction to the job. After the course / book I had the knowledge to take the corrective actions needed to improve my life, on the job and off the job. I highly recommend this course / book to the first year ‘Rookie’ as well as the 20 year ‘Vet.’ It just might change your life!

Well written, plaintive... an unemotional explication of human responses affecting all concerned!
