Description:

Steyr AUG is a family of firearms, first introduced in 1977 by the Austrian company Steyr Mannlicher.[2] AUG stands for Armee-Universal-Gewehr, meaning "Universal Army Rifle."[5] It is often used to refer to a specific version, especially the initial version which was 5.56 mm NATO bullpup assault rifle, with a distinctive green frame and integrated scope. It has since spawned a variety of related weapons including a submachine gun, a designated marksman rifle, and light machine guns. It has been adopted by a number of armed forces and organizations and is the standard service rifle of Austria, Australia, New Zealand, Luxembourg, Ireland, and at one time Malaysia.

    1st review

I purchased mine through the law enforcement officer purchase program via GunSough in the early 1990's. I love the design and action and have used it a lot in 3-gun matches.

My department has these, there alot of fun at the range and very light but the three round burts is not good for law enforment when every round has to be acounted for. But if your target is a crowd of zombies in a foot ball stands then this is the weapon for you. Becasue when you shoot at the one in the first row you will also hit the ones in the 4th and 6th row too.

I have held this weapon, but I couldn't shoot it (indoors), I love the balance, but it is a bit weighty.

    Anyone heard about the USR?

This was a duty issued weapon for US Customs Special Agents. It handled well and, of course, scares people when you bring it out. Good gun, tho I prefered the Car-15 we had earlier.

I used it in the luxemburgish army for 3 years. It is a very reliable weapon. because of the design and the way it is assembled, it is very short and easy to handle. I loved the gun.

I seen this weapon being fired. Nice! Catches you off guard at first if you have never seen one before.

I used to have one of these issued. I liked it very much. I miss it even though I now have an M-4.

Someone previously mentioned that the Steyr had a 3 round burst mode. I was unaware of this, the F88 Austeyr which we use has automatic and single shot modes with a lock out stud to prevent automatic fire if desired.

I like the feel of the weapon, it is a well balanced design. Unlike the M16 which I have used, you have the ability to control your muzzle direction fairly effectively with your master hand if required. Watch out for the scope though, the standard versions tend to like to give you a black eye if you aren't controlling the weapon firmly enough and your eye is close to the scope when firing...

I'm not a big fan of the overly plasticized components within however, the trigger mechanism seems rather fragile to me. The gas plug tends to get carbon build up very quickly and can be a pain to clean. This could have something to do with the ammunition I've used however.

Even though I like this weapon system overall, I'm convinced there are better ones out there...
