The Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), or 5.56mm M249 is an individually portable, gas operated, magazine or disintegrating metallic link-belt fed, light machine gun with fixed headspace and quick change barrel feature. The M249 engages point targets out to 800 meters, firing the improved NATO standard 5.56mm cartridge. The SAW forms the basis of firepower for the fire team. The gunner has the option of using 30-round M16 magazines or linked ammunition from pre-loaded 200-round plastic magazines. The gunner's basic load is 600 rounds of linked ammunition.

Outstanding weapon, esecially the SAW-PARA, the weapon shown in the pic. Good firepower, especially when clearing structures. Also damn good as a crew serve weapon, with the longer barrel.
Dont see it going anywhere in the near future.

Currently carrying this baby in Baghdad. Ive put a couple thousand rounds thru it with no jams. I prefer the 100rd "nutsacks" for carrying around all the time, but its nice to have 200rds sittin beneath the SAW when it gets serious.

I always made sure my saw gunner weapon was in tip top shape before every patrol... This is the squads life saver right here

Great weapon. The first two hundred rounds are great, wish there was a quicker way to reload it.

The M249 is a great infantry support weapon and has been a cornerstone in the Marine Corps fire and movement, modern infantry style of fighting. However in more modern days such as the war in Iraq we Marine grunts encountered violent urban style fighting and quick dismounting from humvees to combat insurgency. Now this varient has may applications that the full sized version did not allow. This platform gives the grunt a full out urban assault weapon. The bipods can be removed and replaced with a rail and foregrip to allow accurate shots from the standing and kneeling positions. In urban wars this is a valuable asset do to the high tempo of light fast movements to establish footholds. The rails also accomidate lights lasers, opitcs and more. The only reason for a low rating is that the weapon heats up rapidly and makes barrel changes quite painfull when you have no time to use a glove.
