| Description: | The 1960s was a time of social and generational upheaval felt with particular intensity in the melting pot of New York City. A culture of corruption pervaded the New York Police Department, where payoffs, protection, and shakedowns of gambling rackets and drug dealers were common practice. The so-called blue code of silence protected the minority of crooked cops from the sanction of the majority. Into this maelstrom came a working class, Brooklyn-born, Italian cop with long hair, a beard, and a taste for opera and ballet. Frank Serpico was a man who couldn't be silenced -- or bought -- and he refused to go along with the system. He had sworn an oath to uphold the law, even if the perpetrators happened to be other cops. For this unwavering commitment to justice, Serpico nearly paid with his life. |

hey frank, sorry if your reading this but oh well, (frank serpico is living somewhere in the eastern us and i wont tell where) i guarded frank after he was shot in greenpoint and was transferred to bklyn jewish hosp. they would only let rookies guard him at the time syd's orders ha-ha.guys like frank and others had to do what they did to break the bad cycle of corruption that was prevelant in the time period. I actually met al pacino while he was filming serpico in my old pct the 80th. during filming. a must read for all who wish to know the historyu of law enforcement in new york city.

A classic "David-vs-Goliath" story of an honest Cop fighting one of the most corrupt groups in the country at the time, unfortunately for him the "Bad Guys" were all Cops working for the NYPD. The Serpico saga resulted in the Knapp Commission hearings and the arrests of numerous corrupt officers. It is a good read and shows just how entrenched graft and corruption had become in the Law Enforecement community at that time.

A must read for all cops. This is not a "Text Book" in terms of Research and don't expect to find a "Works Cited" page, but it is a history or biography of sorts that all cops should be aware of. It shows how easily one can fall into the pit of corruption.
