| Description: | David J. Pelzer's mother, Catherine Roerva, was, he writes in this ghastly, fascinating memoir, a devoted den mother to the Cub Scouts in her care, and somewhat nurturant to her children--but not to David, whom she referred to as "an It." This book is a brief, horrifying account of the bizarre tortures she inflicted on him, told from the point of view of the author as a young boy being starved, stabbed, smashed face-first into mirrors, forced to eat the contents of his sibling's diapers and a spoonful of ammonia, and burned over a gas stove by a maniacal, alcoholic mom. Sometimes she claimed he had violated some rule--no walking on the grass at school!--but mostly it was pure sadism. Inexplicably, his father didn't protect him; only an alert schoolteacher saved David. One wants to learn more about his ordeal and its aftermath, and now he's written a sequel, The Lost Boy, detailing his life in the foster-care system. |

I read both of those books in one day and bawled my eyes out for days afterwards, it affected me THAT much... But I would still recommend them both to everyone.

I read this book and all of Davids other books as well. As a child abuse Detective for the last twelve years I have never investigated a case as bad as this. It is a conmpelling book that you wont put down.
I will make you so mad you wont know whether to throw the book across the room or keep reading.- Flag as inappropriate

Dave Pelzer has been lecturing for years and is amazing in person. It's something to know that he endured all this and still turned out to be a fantastic guy and a great dad. Wonderful book, have read all the others as well...

This book illustrates the horrors this young man went through as a child, and pierces straight through to the very center of human compassion in the reader's heart. I'm not typically over-emotional with movies, TV, books, etc.(whether fictional or not) but this book broke me down into tears. Mr. Pelzer is an amazing example of a true survivor.

I read this book a long time ago. Alot of times things happen in our lives that we can't explain. Sometimes we think we've had it bad and then you read a book like this and .....well, just changes the way you see things...and through it all this boy grew up to be nothing like the monster he called Mom.

A truly remarkable life. Read this book many years ago and have a copy of it to this day. David is a wonderful soul and everyone can learn how good and bad human nature can be..
