After the disappointing debut of the Model K .40 cal., Beretta properly redesigned the handgun and released it in several models. The 902 (also known as the 9-2) is the full size version of the firearm. Among the new design points are a lighter frame, more robust barrel and slide, and mounting rails for lights/lasers. Beretta has maintained the same natural balance and point-shooting that the original model 92 (9 mm) is known for, along with their signature open slide design. They have also improved the stock sights, offering a better sight picture. At the same time, the new sights are easier to replace if the owner wants to switch to one of the new bright sights currently available.

The .40 cal S&W round is a vast improvement in stopping power to the 9 mm. and, although it holds 12 rounds in the magazine (+1 on the chamber) the redesigned frame makes the weapon feel just about the same as the model 92.
