| Description: | The Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) provides an enhanced capability for the 21st century infantryman, with the potential to selectively replace the M16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher, and M4 carbine. When fielded, the OICW dual munition system will provide superior firepower to the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Special Operations Command, Navy, and Coast Guard. Program guidelines were derived from the Small Arms Master Plan (SAMP) and Joint Service Small Arms Master Plan (JSSAMP). OICW was managed by JSSAP during the Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) phase. For the PDRR/EMD phase, OICW management will transition to PM Small Arms with support provided by ARDEC. * Effective range to 1,000 meters * Full defilade target capability * Moving target tracking capability * KE semi two-round burst; HE semi automatic * Recoil level 1/3 that of the M14 * Ruggedized composite weapon housing * Separable HE/KE weapons * Precise target range, automatically communicated to 20mm HE bursting ammo * Five times more lethal than the M16/M203, at > twice the range * Rate of fire with KE ammo >850 rounds/min, with HE >10 rounds/minute * Easily field strippable in under two minutes * Day/night fire control; weapon interface, iron sight backup * HE ammo functional modes: airburst, MOUT short arm, point detonation, point detonation delay, and self-destruct * Laser ranging accuracy ±1/2m out to 500m, ±1m out to 1000m Weapon Operation The fire control system (FCS), using a laser range finder, pinpoints the precise target range at which the HE round will burst and relays this information to the 20mm ammunition fuzing system. Fragments from the bursting munition will defeat PASGT body armor and incapacitate the target. The sighting system provides full 24-hour capability by employing uncooled IR sensor technology for night vision. Accurate OICW 20mm HE airburst at 2.5 meters above ground, using turns-count fuzing precision. World-Class Team For the ATD program, ATK served as system integrator, fuze developer and 20mm HE developer. ATK formed a strong international team, including Heckler & Koch (weapon), Contraves-Brashear Systems (fire control), Octec (video tracker), and Dynamit Nobel (KE and propellant support). For the PDRR/EMD program, the ATK team remains intact and will evolve a combat ready system. |

This is the baddest weapon in the inventory. Heaven help those on the business end of this gun. Bring it on!

That looks awesome. I've never carried anything close to that big--how heavy is it?

According to what I've read the program that was to produce this weapon ended up on the cutting room floor. But if it eve does go to production and issue it will be a huge asset to the man on the ground. It provides superior firpower and flexibility in one weapon system. The main drawback to the individual infantryman wil be the bulk. According to the specs i've read it is supposed to weigh around 25 to 30 lbs. For those of you that have never had to tote a rifle everywhere you go that is alot. As police officers we look for the lightest strongest equiptment, be it our vests, boots, to our pistols. Other than the weight and bulk I don't see a downside to the system. But realistically, who cares about the size, the thing looks awsome.

They killed this product in favor of a general issue rifle project (HK XM-8). Then the general issue rifle project was scraped as well. Looks very cool, but the only place you'll get to shoot one is Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (video game).

While this rifle is awesome, it did have some major drawbacks. The biggest drawback being the sheer bulk of the weapon. If you have ever been in the military you know that if you have to carry a weapon that weighs more than about 8 lbs, you're in for a long day. Another drawback is the price of the weapon. Currently, the government (local and federal) can purchase a M4, AR15, MP5, SL8 for a combined total of half of what this weapon would have been sold for. Thats not very economic. The libs in Washington would have had a field day with that. Overall though, if you could shave 10 lbs off the weight it would be an almost perfect weapon.

Heavy, and the ammo is heavy. The last thing a cop needs is an auto grenade launcher. Also what police department would buy the thing, heck even the military has canceled the program.

you know, thats a good question, its not cool looking by any means, and the 25mm airburst rounds i wouldnt trust. and im a grunt whos all about locating, closing with and destroying the enemy by any means possible but ya gotta think about the load we carry into combat also. Not a good weapon.

It looks like a prop from the movie Aliens. It also looks like it weighs in a about a hundred pounds. Since they killed the project I wounder if size and weight were part of why.

junk...complete junk. The Army cancelled its funding of this weapon a few years back...too big, too heavy, and too useless to the boots on the ground grunt. Good idea, but until they find a way to make it smaller....totally useless.

It looks very large in size and unknown weight. At this point only real testing and field testing, with real firearms user will tell, not sales people.
