The M249 has been a mainstay in the U.S. military since 1986 and is currently serving in over 30 countries around the world. Why? Because it works. In fact, all major components have a service life of over 50,000 rounds. Rain, snow, ice, sand and grit- it doesn’t matter. The M249 just keeps going. Its light weight, compact size and 5.56mm NATO chambering make it quicker, more maneuverable, softer shooting alternative to heavier machine guns

The M249 is amazingly accurate and is known for it's reliability. Was iffy about rating it a 5, but decided to go ahead and give it 5 stars. If it weren't for its rate of fire, you might want to pack something with a bigger punch but in its own category, the M249 is top of the line. My 2 cents.

The safest feeling in a fire team is being the SAW gunner

i wasn't as big of a fan of this one, only because we had two cook offs when i was in training. other than those two problems i like its rate of fire. very scary for the man on the other side

I was a light machine gunner in the U.S. Army back in 2003-2004. This weapon soon became my absolute favorite because of it's reliability even under the harshest conditions. I was also impressed with it's ease of maintenance and how few moving parts it actually possessed. I never had a barrel warpage or had to deadline the weapon for service. The only feed problems that ever occured were when the 30 round mags from the M16A2 were used. The SAW grew on me and after a while I didn't even mind the weight of it, the extra barrels, ammo, and my M16A2. A truly great weapon and I still preffer it over the M16A2 anyday.

I've carried this weapon in Iraq for 10 months now. It's a good reliable weapon but not as light as one might think. I also have a short barrel on it and a collapsable butt stock. This weapon is a beast and has never failed me. Easy to control form hip or shoulder. slight muzzle raise at first but easily corrected. I put 800 rounds in a 5 inch hole at 25 meters from the prone position. Its is a flick of a switch to change barrels and easy to load.

The M249 machine gun is a gas-operated, air-cooled, belt or magazine-fed, automatic weapon that fires from the open-bolt position. The maximum effective range of the M249 with tripod and T+E is 1,000 meters. The maximum range of the M249 against an AREA target for the tripod is 1,000 metersand a bipod is 800 meters. The maximum range of the M249 against a POINT target for the tripod is 800 meters and the bipod is 600 meters. This weapon weighs 16.41 LBS (Mine a little less beacuse of the short barrel and collapsable butt stock). The length of the this weapon 40.87 inches ( again mine is shorter with the mods). Two unique features of the M249 is that it has a regulator to change the rate of fire, and it is fed by M16 magazines as well as belt fed. Hope this was helpful for anyone whom did not know anything about this great weapon.
