Traditional DA/SA, Manual Thumb-Saftey, Magazine-Disconnect, Large-Frame, all Stainless-Steel construction & parts, 5-inch barrel, very accurate, quick/short trigger-reset, utmost-reliability; even feeds/chambers empty 45 shells, it's that good.

This was my first handgun when I became a PO. It served me well over the years and don't recall a single jam. It was bit heavy on the hip after a days tour but overall a well made gun.

It's predecessor, the 645, was my first duty weapon. In the era of polymer pistols and higher capacity magazines, it's fallen from grace a bit, but as others have said, it's a proven performer, accurate and I concur that it will feed anything, even empty cases. For the weight, I'd probably carry Glock 21 with more rounds, but I wouldn't hesitate to trust my life to the 4506, ever.

I carried on of these for about 5 years and was found to be very reliable but very heavy.

We carry the 4046 at work. Great weapon, just wish it wasn't so heavy. Very well put together, and thought out set of pistols.

It is a very reliable weapon. Mine is almost 25 years old and still fires like new with minimal gunsmithing required. It only gets 4 outof 5 because of its weight and that you only have 8 rounds, but you dont need that many because of its large caliber.

I enjoy shooting this pistol. However, I need to have a trigger job done.

This was my first auto pistol and fell in love with the moment I pulled it out of the box. It is comfortable in your hands, well balanced and durable.

Classic S&W. Has great visual appeal. Accurate and reliable. More of a on-duty uniform carry gun. Not for plainclothes or off-duty, its a boat anchor.
Still though I carry it in my go-bag.- Flag as inappropriate

My first 45 ACP I ever owned! Heavy, reliable and big bore. Back in the 80's and early 90's if a department was issued a 45 most likely it was this one. I traded my 4506 for a 4563 TSW. Had I known that Smith was going to discontinue this awesome weapon I would've hung on to it.

I really like my pistol, too bad they discontinued it so long ago. Makes finding new holsters impossible when the old ones wear out.
