Outstanding shotgun at a reasonable price. The express enables you to use a variety of shells. Excellent for simple home defense weapon. The only drawback is the modification needed to attach an extended magazine tube, but worth it.

excellent gun. added a sling and a pistol grip to mine, with an 18" barrel and mag extension. the pistol grip helps very much for quick target focus after shot.

I was given one for my 12th b-day or was it Christmas? It's an '870 EXPRESS' with a wooden stock fore-end and a long hunting barrel with a sight rib and a bead on the end. I've heard nothing but good things of it. I've seen nothing but good things from it. I've killed much-a-game animal with it. It's relentless on Pheasant. I've heard stories of men 'soiling' their pants upon hearing the charging of the weapon's action (rack-a-round). Upgradeable, versatile, reliable, durable.........all-able. Best pump shotgun available. The 870 is to shotguns, what the .98 Mauser is to rifles. Strong, reliable, and oh yes, very upgradeable.

these are ok, but are no match with the wingmaster, especially the magnum but all in all, a good pump for the price.

our department issues the 870 as our standard "STREET HOWITZER" and having used shotguns in the ARMY (MOSSBURG 590) i know first had of thier effectiveness... mine currently has only the basic 4 shot tube and the foreend prevents me putting on a side saddle but reliability and simplisity are EXCELLENT!!!

I have been issued this weapon with my department. We have added pistol grips to many but I kept the old school look. I love this weapon on Mids because when you rack it you mean bidness to the standard POS on the street. We carry 6 buckshot in the extender and 4 slug in the stock. Just point this "Cannon" and let it rip baby!!!!

Excellent weapon. This is a item I'm proud to take with me on patrol. As far as universal communicators go, this one has my vote. Accurate with a slug, easy to use even for the novice, and easy to "personalize" for day to day use.

GREAT weapon! I carried this in my patrol units for six yrs as a USAF cop and then 23.5 yrs as a PD cop and I'm finally about to buy my own. Don't cha just love that distinctive metal-on-metal sound when ya rack one in?
Which reminds me of a story...As a rookie - "many, many years ago", I was booking a crook when a hot call came out. Of course, Homer Simpson here, forgets to drop by the handgun lockers outside of booking-DOH! So anyways, about half way to the call, it was cancelled. As I headed back to booking, I saw Ricky RoadRacer in front of me at the corner of Walk and Don't Walk, earning himself an appointment with traffic court. Of course, RRR gets pulled over. As I got out of my car, I reached for the butt of my S&W as I always did...and guess what? DOH! Well, being that I was semi-committed, I reached in the car, pulled out my 870 and slung it down along my leg and apprached RRR. RRR, being the smarta$$ that he was, started chipping at me before I was even up to his window. "May I see your DL sir, etc etc?" RRR must not have been in a good mood or not have been taught good manners by his Ma, 'cause the words outta his mouth woulda made a career sailor blush! "No sir, you don't understand, I really need to see your DL for the cite I'm gonna write you." A few more words that aren't in the dictionary came outa his mouth, ending with "and so, what are you gonna do about it, chump?" With that I raised the 870 to port arms and, with a liitle more effort than was really needed, racked a round home - did I mention that I just love that sound - and in my big police officer's voice, sternly said "I'm gonna see that damn license of your's, whether you hand it to me now all nice like or I pull it from your cold hands later, so what'll it be, @$$&o|~ ?" Within moments, I had every form of ID he could pull out of his wallet. So I wrote RRR the cite, then went straight to my patrol sgt to turn myself in. Explained the circs to him and all he said was "damn I love that sound."
Moral #1: I NEVER forgot my duty weapon since!
Moral #2: Remington 870...don't leave home without it!

My all time personal favorite is the Ithaca Model 37 (...I still personally own one); but very few Departments used that shotgun; so it's the tired & true Remington 870 for us. Remington has been around since 1816 and is well respected world wide. The 870 has been around since 1950, has a solid reputation and is well supported by after market manufacturers. I've seen these guns unintentionally take quite a bit of a beating and keep right on ticking, just like a Timex. You really can't go wrong with this gun.

The 870 is a proven veteran of the shotgun wars. It is a very durable weapon to use in law enforcement as well as personal use. These days there are so many different options you can go with the 870 to make it yours. Very trustworthy shotgun.

Not as good as a mossberg pump shotgun, but still a great shotgun. I have used them several times for hunting and never had a complaint. I just like my Mossbergs better

I respect this bad boy because it always functions properly and is easy to use. I just sent my baby off to Vang Comp to have it upgraded to a shotgun that will digest anything up to shells that will stop a Grizzly bear. For extra security around the house I use a Tuf-loc wall mountable police shotgun rack that is bolted through the wall with security hardware. One would need to cut out a through and through section of the wall to get at it and then they must break the locking mechanism which is a medeco high security lock!

I ordered mine from Walmart with the slug barrel and plain wood stock for around $230. I switched out the stock for a collapsible m-4 type and the forend for a 3-rail to hang a light on. With a sidesaddle and a butstock carrier I can keep 3 rounds of buck loaded, 3 more in the sidesaddle and 3 slugs in the sidesaddle. The stock carrier is for beanbags. Our shotgun course includes provision to completely unload lethal rounds to transition to beanbags and keep another gunner as lethal cover. It works great and leaves the option to load select slug for distance on top of the magazine. Mine has always been reliable and accurate with the rifle sights.

I am partial to the 870's as they are reliable and easy to clean and use. My only issue is minor. The forend slide can fall slightly when the shot gun is held vertically. I am not a huge fan of the slide release location and prefer WInchester or Mossberg's setup, but not enough that I am willing to give up the 870. Since it is the shot gun of my choice, even though it is not perfect, I rate it at five stars.

This shot gun is issued by the department the rear sling mounts were moved from the but stock to the pistol grip to allow them to fit in the shotgun/rifle racks in the Dodge Chargers. Very solid weapon take abuse well.

I have owed this weapon for about 2 years. This 870 express can shoot 3in. magnum brass shells. I haven't shot the brass shells yet. This weapon has very little kick as most shotguns go. Six months after I got the 870 I just layed down to sleep and a few people broke into my home. I immediatly grabbed the shot gun and chambered a round. As soon as I did that it sounded like a herd of elephants going down my stairs and out the front door. The shotgun has a huge amount of psycological deturant to it when u hear it being chambered. I would recammend it for home security anytime.

I have owned this gun personally for years and it has seen many hours in the field and duck blind. Rugged and reliable, it has weathered salt water, mud, and been dropped countless times but has yet to jam on me. A great value, and lots of bang for the buck (pun intended). Although if it wouldn't have been for hurricane Katrina, I would still be shooting my favorite shotgun: The Ithica model 37 "featherweight"

Good gun. Very reliable. This is my entry gun, I use on our SWAT Team. We bought this gun new and sent it off to Wilson Combat. Wilson Combat made many upgrades which include, a new finish, an extended magazine tube, ghost ring night sights,Sure Fire forearm with light, A side saddle, and a custom sling. The gun is actually also very accurate with slugs at 100 yards. The gun is very devastating with tactical buckshot, from 50 yards and in.

I purchased one, "second hand" for my battle bag/raid weapon. I have modified it for my specific needs, adding a colapsing stock, heat shield, picatinny forearm, and single loop sling.
Like many of the earlier reviewers, I was and continue to be a fan of the Mossberg. Not because the 500 is so much better, but only because of the "top tang" safety is so much more user friendlier that the offering on the 870.
It is a work horse, it will take a licking, and keep on kicking butt! It will be a constant companion beyond my retirement. Just a time tested, and proven platform! It gets a 9.5 out of 10 from me.

i love the 870 line i use one on duty and i also have two at home one is the wood stock magnum chambered for 3" shells i use for small game and pests. and the other is the composit stock super mag chambered for the 3 1/2" mag shells i use for cyotes and turkey hunting. and to releave a little stress every now and then. i get stressed then i just grab some 3 1/2 inch mag buck shot go out side and shoot it makes me forget all about being stressed out. if you aint tried i i suggest you try it. just hold on tight cause it kicks like a pissed off mule on roids. lol. Love the guns good for all uses.
