Several years ago I bought a used one from my then Chief Deputy. Love the gun. It is durable and handles well. Is easy to maintain as well. this gun features Ruger's Transfer Bar Operating Mechanism with Cylinder Interlock which in my opinion is awesome. I carry this gun off duty frequently. Wish I had it in .357 mag though.

I carry this weapon on a daily basis. As a former police officer and now a prosecutor different rules of engagement apply as the ever popular civil liability of a guaranteed lawsuit following a discharge of weapon incident is waiting to spring. I carry the 2" barrel with the docked hammer. This allows for great concealability, easy snagless draws and sufficient firepower to neutralize a threat rapidly. When carrying this weapon it provides increased protection, a very loud report and accuracy at close range. As a civilian, the justification for using dealy force in public comes with many limitations. The scenarios will require close contact or an imminent threat where the ability to retreat is not possible. The five shot capability is adequate because, as in any shooting there will be an accounting for each round discharged. In a civilian authorized use of deadly force situation the number of rounds discharged will be limited or the imminence of the threat will be deemed to have diminished and the use of deadly force no longer legal. The loud report of the shot being discharged and the bright muzzle flash serve to get the attention of an attacker rapidly and could help in neutralizing the threat even if the subject is not mortally wounded. Additionally, unlike semiautomatic weapons there is no slide to lubricate reducing the chances of a misfire. The sp101 is reliable, accurate and easily concealed making it an excellent choice for off duty or civilian licensed carry.
