I bought this as a backup and ended up giving it to my wife because she loved the way it shot. Its got enough weight to keep the kick down and is somewhat concealable.

As a gunsmith I know each manufacturer has it's strong points and weak points...The SP101 is one of Ruger's crown jewels! It's a solid, bullet proof, piece of work that has a place for public service as well as home defence. And if your cash poor, or just want to shoot a crap load of ammo..you can always go with 38 specials!

I bought this little beauty in the early '90s as personal protection. When I got into law enforcement it became my backup weapon. I still have it. I love the fact that I can use .38s for practice and .357s for more serious stuff.

Bought one a few years back and love it. The weight is perfect which keeps down recoil. The recessed hammer is a good option for conceal carry to keep from snagging clothes.

This is the first revolver I have ever shot. The 38's were awesome, but the .357 will take some getting used to- they show no love. Awesome weapon.

I carry this as my back-up (with a smooth hammer) and have had no problems. This is what I want when I'm at bad-breath range with a badguy.

Great gun. Ruger makes them to be tough. Down fall, Ruger makes them to be tough. They tend to be heavier then other guns in the same class. I carried one for a while, and loved it, but now have a lightweight S&W, and I like the weight a lot more with the S&W.

I love this gun, it's easy for me to handle because I have small hands. I am very comfortable using it. I would not trade it.

I bought this outstanding rugged little pistol back in the 80's and it has never let me down. Very good accuracy for such a short barrel and its weight tames recoil when shooting magnum loads.
I often carry this while off duty, but it is pretty heavy for its size.- Flag as inappropriate

I originally carried a S&W 66 which was issued at the academy. I was range officer and one of the deputies was having trouble with hitting where she was supposed to. I took her Ruger SP101 to see if it was a sight problem. It shot so well that I went back to the office and traded my S&W for the Ruger.

This weapon is incredible! I have the 2 1/4 inch with hammer in .357 which is easy to control with medium velocity magnum loads. It conceals good with belt or IWB holsters. I use 38s for fun but have fired as many as 30 .357s in one session with no problem. I have carried many weapons off duty over the years including G26, G27, NAA 32 Guardian, Walther PPK 380, Kahr PM-9, Sig P229, Smith M&P 40 compact and Smith model 642 and the Ruger is one of the best. It is very reliable and rugged. The weight is perfect for off duty use but a little heavy for backup carry on smaller officers thus the Smith 642 usually goes in pocket for BUG or in summer wearing shorts. 2 extra reloads with speed strips or speed loaders go along with it. Ruger really got this one right, I love it.

Excellent weapon, Heavy duty steel construction. Versatile in the ammunition area, as the weapon fires both 357 and 38 shells. Light weight, approximately 27 oz. For the price it is an excellent choice.
