UPDATE: "Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub said, adding that the victim's wallet was found discarded near the crime scene.
The great nephew of a World War II veteran who was killed outside a lodge in Spokane, Wash., speaks out about his great uncle. KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus reports.
"Race was not a factor. Additionally, there was no gang activity that was associated with his incident," he added, apparently responding to some commentators who had seized on the fact the teens were black and the victim was white. "These are two young men who just spun out of control."
I apologize for the uproar the title created, when I posted the article the perpetrators of this heinous act were not in custody, unknown and only descriptions were available. Since then BOTH are now in custody.
I don't think I'm out of line for pointing out that this headline was tweaked specifically to tweak people. That is my opinion and I stand by it. Period.
Thanks, 36TR, for reminding us that Mr. Belton's family and friends may come across our words here and take courage justice will be served. My very deepest condolences to them. God comfort and bless them.
FYI: In case there are those of you wondering what happened to your comments, they have been removed. We don't need bantering back and forth.
Rest in Peace, Sir!!
Very sad that we lost a man who fought so bravely for his country during WWII because a coupe of individuals decided to rob him. Sorry but yes I do think there was some racial intent to this as well. There have been so many instnces of Black on White crime lately with those involved even admitting they were wanting to hurt white people it annot be ignored! Since Obama became President he has managed to setback race relations over 50 years with obvious Bigotry from the White House and other high Officials in Government such as the AG's Office.
Fry 'Em !!
Kids comitting violent crimes for fun and/or boredom. Seems to be a lot of things like this going on lately. Hoping the local authorities can catch up to the second POS and figure out why they did this. BTW, bump Max in spades about the firing squad !!!! Rest in peace, Mr. Beltron; you deserved a better fate ......
PS That is to say - bump Donnalynn.
The continuing quest for equal treatment under the law birthed by the Civil Rights Movement is rent apart by media headlines that broadcast skin color of the suspects. Labeling had come to be considered prejudicial and therefore a social and legal risk from the standpoint of influencing the jury selection process.
It's become common practice once again.
This article should have been titled, "88 YEAR OLD WW2 VET BEATEN BY TWO TEENAGERS OUTSIDE EAGLES LODGE DIES"
Then readers everywhere will be compelled to wonder if Mr. Belton was targeted because he was an old man and a veteran. The question of Mr. Belton's own skin color would not inform the perpetrators' act except to reveal at as pure malice - an offense to all men and women of a conscionable society.
Shorn of race elements headlines train the laser of justice properly for all conscionable beings who stand together to seek it. If the investigation then discovers evidence showing a hate crime was also committed, it may be added to the stack of already shocking charges for which a jury should seek retribution to the fullest extent of the law.
Update: They arrested one of the teens and charged him with first degree murder and first degree robbery.
do you think we can get the honorable? Rev sharpton or Jackson to scream outrage at this????
