As far as your last statement is concerned, isn't that what congressional Republicans are attempting to get done by questioning witnesses? Seeing as how the American public will never get a straight answer about what really happened from those who are "in charge", somebody holding just as much power needs to ask the tough questions. Referring back to the earlier statement made in regards to the former president (who had absolutely nothing to do with this, or the creation of a category 5 hurricane and the inept response of local government, how's at Sandy response working for you by the way?) what the he!! was the man supposed to do? Run around and create a panic in front of school kids? One thing we can all agree on here, at least we knew where our POTUS was during that attack and exactly who was in charge. We can't seem to find the answers to those questions on this one, hence the need for the hearings.

I'm not sure I agree with you Ajs on that rather colorful theory, but note I did say the Administration probably ran with witness testimony of a smaller related incident for sake of the upcoming election. I agree, but the next day the POTUS did come out and called it an act of TERROR. So now what do we have, some Teandrathals fishing, but at best they may only hook onto a case of sloppy Public Relations.

Remember, Ambassador Stevens was serving as the Director of the Office of Multilateral Nuclear and Security Affairs at the time, and he has served abroad since 1991, and under dubya in Libya from 2007-2009.
    See US Foreign Service/Source Wiki:^ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Christopher_Stevens

I agree Stevens is the first Ambassador killed in a decade, but certainly not the first staffed US citizen or Military personnel killed at an Embassy. I recall 241 dying in 1993 in Beirut after the Military was ordered not to have any loaded weapons, several attacks during the Clinton Administration, Dubya's 9/11 along with 13 attacks abroad.
    Source: ^http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca/13-benghazis-that-occurre_b...

I don't think it's a witch hunt and political posturing, I know it is. I'll explain why I assert this view.

No one really heard about how upset Republicans were at President Dubya when 9/11 happened, nor did you hear them upset during Katrina.

~One tragic event (9/11/01)is dubbed the terrorists fault.
~One tragic event (9/11/12)is dubbed the POTUS fault, of course with an emphasis on Secretary Hillary Clinton that may be running for office.

    Perhaps a subtle clue.

~One POTUS continues to read a Story about a yellow duckie as planes go into WTC on our own soil. (I heard the Jets myself, and that was long after the attack)
~One POTUS is dubbed an abject failure for something going on overseas and after funding was denied.
Timeline of Attacks (keep in mind there are two attacks, two hour plane ride apart)
    Source:^ http://armedservices.house.gov/index.cfm/files/serve?File_id=286253...

Also, why aren't they more 'concerned' about critiquing what went wrong, and tweaking a way they can fix the problem?

More importantly, before the incident even occurred, why did they vote down almost a half Billion for dollars the Embassy requested for increased security ? Ouch.

I conclude, the whole Benghazi-gate is nothing more then a witch hunt, a smear campaign and one very tactless fund raiser at the expense of dead Americans. Speaking of dead Americans, perhaps people dying here would be better off dying in Benghazi so these Politicians can pay attention to what's going on right here right now ?

Or perhaps these Politicians need to get off their collective ass's and stop chasing bogus things such as unicorns, birth certificates, college transcripts, wars on religion, the Easter bunny debacle, wars on Christmas, conspiracy theories and do the Gosh darn actual JOB they've been elected to do as well as PAID to do for once!

Ambassadors are givens their positions at the behest of the president due to something they have done for him in the past. Some get plum assignments some don't. Either way it is because they have "kissed the ring" and may be considered a friend of the POTUS, most certainly an insider. The consulate (before the edit) was under attack for 9 hours. POTUS's friend was left high and dry without a call for air support or anything else. Eyewitness testimony before Congress has rocket propelled grenades and automatic rifles in the crowd "protesting a film".........and I have a bridge to sell you. The ambassador was armed with.......? If that is how the POTUS treats his "friends" then my goodness, can you imagine how he treats his enemies (see IRS audits in reference to the TEA Party). Regardless, an American consulate was under heavy attack and the people there were left to die, support was told to stand down, 4 Americans were killed (1st ambassador in over a generation), a more than obvious coverup being dismantled and you think this is political? This is about what is right for the citizens of this country and the ineptness of our government. Remember the rediculous political ad Hillary Clinton put out in the lib primaries in 2008? Who would we trust more to answer the phone at 0300? Herself or then candidate obama? Judging by the inaction and lack of reaction (and coverup) of both during this attack upon Americans, neither.

Good Lord, Instead believing a strategically edited clip from a slanted news source, I saw most of that dialogue and Hillary Clinton did not just randomly blurt out what difference does it make.

On the night of the attack, a witness who is also a Lawyer, spotted militants gather about 20 youths and had them chant against the film. My best guess being that was during an election, they ran with that as they were power pressed for immediate answers.

It is unkown to me as of yet why was a bill for more funds filibustered? Gail from the State Department testified that this had no result in the Benghazi attack. I disagree, common sense will tell you by all the reports that they were lacking proper security and practically working with a skeleton crew. Information obtained from one of the captured militants said "There wasn't and ant in sight."(protecting the compound to begin with) To make matters worse, there was two separate attacks that night the military had to deal with, one being a 2 hour flight away.

Ambassador Stevens served as Director of the Office of Multilateral Nuclear and Security Affairs. He attempted to escape from the roof but was overcome by smoke inhalation. There was a picture of him surrounded by locals and some tried to pass it off as he was being dragged by militants, but witness's, (both American and locals), were interviewed and both said that locals were trying to save him but he later went into cardiac arrest.

Some my question would be, how much tax payer money and time be spent for an obvious witch hunt and political posturing, when these same Politicians can have their collective ass's out there working to create jobs like they promised to do when we (re)elected them?

If they worked as hard at being bipartisan as they do trying to smear one another and appeasing lobbyists, perhaps this would have never happened?

Marly you are right. In the immortal words of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, "What difference does it make?" I hope those words haunt her forever.

Dunno about the 'not-getting-briefings-armchair-quarterbacking analysis, mz66.' Nor would I call off Gates' remarks onto mere 'pontificating'. Further, castigating 'pontificators' in this format isn't my idea of productive dialogue.

While it is true our forces are diffused onto several fronts and we are NOT privy to any kind of special operation response to the Benghazi invasion, nine hours is a h*ll of a long time NOT to figure out the symbolic significance of drilling down from the air.

Nonetheless, presuming incompetence in these critical situations is never the right course. That is because, conservatively speaking, we must assume whatever factors came into play are likely not related to partisan posturing. Our enemies are comforted by partisan division at the murder of our ambassador, so best to knock it off, no?

ajsdaddyCCSO, I am coming from the same place you are. I can also allow that air support might have been ordered up, then fire was held for one reason or another.

Truth is, we won't know. Will we?

Keep in mind, Mr. Gates is no longer the Secretary of Defense nor is he in government anymore receiving any briefings--i.e. he is armchair quarterbacking, just as you are. The difference is he has a lot better qualifications than either you or I to pontificate on this subject.

""We don't have a ready force standing by in the Middle East, and so getting somebody there in a timely way would have been very difficult, if not impossible." said Gates. Because, nothing bad has ever happened to the US on 9-11, right? If there wasn't anyone standing by, that's further proof that some people at the top should lose their jobs, or not have their contract picked up when they try for another job.

What are our special forces troops for again? To make light of the subject of 4 Americans killed in a terrorist attack on an American consulate shows where one's mentality truly is. The administration wouldn't even order up air support. Wow! Where was the CINC during this 9 hour long attack by the way? I wonder if Gates would have called in protection if the POTUS himself was under attack for 9 hours overseas? The entirety of this administration is truly gutless and this example shows how inept they are at doing anything besides patting themselves on their collective backs for their own stupidity.

It would have been very difficult to send in some troops to rescue Benghazi so Gates agrees that we should have gone ahead and let them die. Really???? We could not have sent in air support because it would have been dangerous?? Really???
