The law mandates that we provide a K-12 compulsory education to everyone until the age of 21. Is it just me or does anyone else see a huge problem with this picture. People should have seen an incident like this coming like a freight train coming down the tracks. This is the kind of incident that probably happens way more than ever gets reported and is a direct result of what can happen when we allow an 18-21 year old the right to a free public education in an environment loaded with minors. On the surface, it would sound like this was a consensual act between the 19 year old male and the 14 year old female students until one realizes that a 14 year old can not consent by law. Given the facts and circumstances, where was the appropriate adult supervision in the classroom that would have been able to prevent this incident from occurring had he or she been present? I am not opposed to anyone receiving his or her K-12 compulsory education. That said, I am opposed to having anyone 19 years and older receiving it in the traditional high school environment. There has to be another way to protect the children and still satisfy the law and a persons right to an education. If it is a choice between the two, protecting the children should be the priority and should ALWAYS come first.
