Having a well balanced dog, A Pit and Lab in this case, can be a catch 22 when it comes to dog nappers. It only takes ONE dog to agree to go, and the other one will follow. Dogs don't like to be separated from their pack.
With that in mind, If these owners have the time and energy to add one last dog to the pack, they should go to a shelter and adopt a slightly unstable, but not too fearful small breed.
Why? Large domestic dogs are usually very humble to small breeds, and it's common for them to allow them the Alpha Role in the home b/c their not a threat to the large breeds. The large breeds would probably channel the small breed's fear of the intruder, and would alert the two softies not to go.
Glad their safe! lol
