Bump Elite and AJS. We can't have our cake and eat it too! As long as the constitution and law are followed I have no problem with keeping firearms or any other deadly weapon out of the hands of those who should not have them! The title says it all Shock report!
Under current law you have to be ajudicated mentally defective by a judge!
People better realize this is not only PTSD it could be said for depression as well! What is the legal definition for incompetency or mental illness and based on that alot of people could have their rights taken away! If you ever talked to a counselor are you still sick?? Officers involved in a critical incident could suddenly be out of a job under these federal standards! This slippery slope has a very fine line!
This could also affect the hiring of returning veterans to law enforcement jobs! How many Vietnam veterns were police officers or firemen?
a person that is mentally incompitant should not own a weapon that is a given
PTSD is a complicated issue and this is not just a military issue as many police officers and firefighters have suffered with it but with the right treatment they are able to cope and continue their public safety careers!
PTSD is not new it has been called shell shock war norosis and has been around for years!
The situation with the mass shooters and the illnesses and the meds they took keeps being hidden!
If help is sought voluntarily they shouldn't be punished!
I recently had an encounter with a veteran with PTSD. He was determined to jump off a bridge at its apex in an effort to kill himself. We deployed three units in order to intercept him before he reached the bridge. We did intercept him before he reached the bridge. He was running across 4 lanes of busy highway both with and against traffic. I had to physically place my patrol car in front of him as he was running in order to cut him off as he was running and almost him over. This was in a low light hard to see area. He told us his story and we transported him to the local hospital and had him IVC'd. 2 days later he was transported to a VA mental facility to get some help. Fortunately this situation came to a positive end and I hope he gets the help he needs to deal with his demons. All of that being said, I would hope he would not be granted a permit to purchase a weapon. In my opinion, as is in the language of the letter from the VA, "A determination of incompetency will prohibit you from purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition." A determination of incompetency. In my opinion that means a mental health issue which is what we are generally facing here when it comes to the mass shootings which have been occuring. I could be wrong however if you have a mental health issue you should not be allowed to own a firearm.
