Training in autism awareness and dealing with the special needs community and recognizing medical emergencies is Critical however most departments wont do it until its mandated after a civil judgement in an incident like this!
Very sad case :-( I wish this could of been prevented, but I wasn't there....
Down's Kids are generally easy to spot. Training for special needs kids is important.
Whether it was poor procedure or some other reason the thing that scares me most is reading the comments that follow the story. In our profession we need to do everything we can to be better educated and follow accepted practices more than ever. Remember that those who post after the story will be the jury judging you. We owe it to ourselves to make sure that never happens.
