If you drink excessive amounts of this crap on a daily basis, you can get some serious side effects. Of course, even without it, you're going to get tooth rot, obesity, diabetes (sugar and phosphates), high blood pressure (caffeine), etcetera.

FYI: PepsiCo still uses it in Mountain Dew and has no plans to remove it anytime soon.
From another article,
About 10 percent of drinks sold in the United States contain it, including Mountain Dew, which is also made by PepsiCo; some flavors of Powerade and Fresca from Coca-Cola; and Squirt and Sunkist Peach Soda, made by the Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
PepsiCo said it had no plans to remove the ingredient from Mountain Dew and Diet Mountain Dew, both of which generate more than $1 billion in annual sales.

There are plenty of food ingredients that have more than one use. Let's take the most obvious one:
Water. It's a flame-retardant, too. Ew. Disgusting, right? :)
Not that I'm going to protest the removal of BVO from Gatorade--but I'm just saying this is purely a consumer relations move, not a safety issue.
