Wow! I Know that there is still a lot of bigotry here in the USA be it white against black, black against white, brown against black or white and vice verse but the idea of actual Racism, the belief that certain races of people are different on the evolutionary scale...man how stupid is that! Steve, good on you brother, I would have done the same. It just amazes me, and hurts me to see people who are so ignorant that they think this way. I saw this when I moved to the South in 1966. I came from Mass. and the only Blacks in town happened to be my neighbors and good friends. Then to see basically good people from the South so ignorant to actually think there is a difference in Black and White as humans just blew my mind. These people did not hold anything really against the Black folks and did not dislike them at all, they simply did not think they were 'equal' as far as being humans! I was thunderstruck and angry to say the least.

I too have heard of Vidor,Texas, many years ago.I the early 1990's I retired to a small resort community in central Arkansas and became an officer there.,after having worn the badge for twenty five years,A good friend of mine was the town constable in another small community one mile away. This is the Bible Belt and full of Baptist churchs. The Baptist church in the CFounstable's city burned one night(arson). The day before, the church had accepted membership of an Afro-American family,in the area. The K.K.K> and C.S.A. both claimed responsibility. For those who are unaware of the C.S.A.,this is the Covenent Sword and Arm of the Lord.A white supremist group ,who claim to be religious which was founded by mostly ex-cons and has been active in the area for the past three decades.

My mother's family is from west Texas. We traveled through that area at least twice a year to visit family. My father told us about the sign... and I never recall us stopping there.

Did someone moved the hands of time back to the 50's. This may be off topic some however, when my Dad married Mom they moved to the Kansas City, MO area. My Mother was full blooded Mexican and was dark skinned. She told me horror stories of the treatment she received as she did not speak english and was of Mexican decent. This story proves it is still alive and well.

Bump Matt and Marly! If they wanted to change then those who choose not to should pack their Chit and find a nice place outside of America to practice their Black arts (Pun intended)!

Well written and insightful article. The closing rings true as well--particularly in view of your experience, Steven.

Still, what took me aback was how Vidor had evolved into a kind of complacency. It was trying to change, but not all that hard, and sometimes wanted to be left alone. And to a great extent, that explained why Vidor has not quite escaped its past.

Vidor rang a bell, but that might be because of King Vidor, the famous Hollywood director who I believe was the father of the man who founded Vidor, Texas.

A quick search yields lots of references to KKK activity in Vidor. This photo was purportedly taken on one of Vidor's main streets in 1985. I believe at that time KKK language was not yet defined as hate speech. Funny how a racist message becomes fueled. In the photograph, we discover how the proximity between LEOs protecting the Right to Assembly and the signs and symbols of terrorism seem almost to blend into a single message.

I will leave it to the view what that message seems to say.

I have never heard of this town in Texas until I had the pleasure of visiting my son in Kingswood, Texas. (A Houston, Texas suburb.) We were talking on the phone and I told him I needed to stop for fuel! He excitedly told me not to stop in this town and to get fuel before or after I get to Vidor, Tx. Because of their racist attitudes.

Well, after being told that I made it a point to visit this peace of heaven! Sure enough, he and this article was correct!

I pulled into a gas station in that town and my wife went inside the store there to use the bathroom! I was pumping gas. I then went inside and asked the clerk where my wife was because I did not see her! The clerk responded, "Oh, the lady she went to the restroom on the side of the building.".

Then one of Vidor finest came in to the store and stood in the first aisle and just stared at me, so I stared back! That went on for about 5 minutes or so and then my wife came in and I swear this idget turned beet red, but did not say anything. I then walked back to the car to finish pumping gas! It was a little chilly outside so I put on my windbreaker that has police on the back of it and returned to the inside of the store.

I then purchased a couple of items and my wife and I then walked back to the car to leave, then this idget got back in his car and ran my tag!

    WHY?

    When will this BS stop!

I was a law abiding citizen in a place I should be allowed to be in without being intimidated by the local yokels I firmly believe had I not put on my jacket. This event would have turned ugly!
