Like I said. Putting aside the hypocritical finger-wagging, this kind of conduct is a security risk. THAT is why it is discouraged. WHY it has to be sprawled across the media is a different story. Like darsavmo said, a lot of damage to innocent people has resulted from this exposure.
Transparent intelligence services is an oxymoron. Americans are not being served in this debacle.
Basically, according to these geniuses, if you're in a career that carries risk, you're more likely to risk an extramarital affair. Not to mention the common knowledge if are stressed out, depressed, celebrating a victory, sexually under-served or needy for affection or romance, you're more likely to risk an affair. If you have a glamorous or tedious job, you are at risk. If let your eyes go out on springs when a pretty woman walks by you are more likely to risk your hand at cards then strike up an affair. If your husband forgets your anniversary again, you are more likely to fall prey to a ladies man. If you need an ego boost or a shoulder to cry on, or are just plain horny, you are at risk.
In other words, if you are breathing you are at some risk of an affair. One look at the divorce rate in the US suggests that the Holier Than Thou Club should quit jonesing over this one.
Having lived in the beltway for a few years(many years ago), I see that it is simply business as usual, just a different set of leaders. As darsavmo mentioning the the cedibility of F.B.I. agents,I concur.Having been in the law enforcement field for the better part of three decades I have discovered many of their agents suffer from a "My Stuffith Doesn't Stinkith Syndrome"
Who died and CANONIZED our military and intelligence services?? This DEBACLE falls into the Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Stone Category. Yawn. A security risk, probably - but wouldn't even have made news in most European countries. Only to slake the Peeping Tom prurient interest of lip-smackin' US audiences who've moved on from Gaga's meat dress to fingerwag like a bunch of nattering schoolmarmish voyeurs. Puh-leeze!!
Wag the Dog? You hit the nail on the head.
Oh, and did anyone want to know how I stand on the issue?? lol
I guess former Presidents (fill in the names) were also blinded! It also appears many in the current Administration are also blinded or just have temporary amnesia as to when they were told what about this. While he (Petraeus) apparently cheated on his wife, this witch hunt has not only taken down our CIA Director, but now may take down another General, has ruined the professional and private lives of 2 apparentl influential women, affected 3 and maybe more spouses, has brought the credibility of the FBI and it's agents into serious question, has placed a shadow over the entire Justice Department as well as the CIA and now the DOD, and all for what? This scandal combined with the recent Secret Service fiasco has only served to enhance the viewership of all the media channels and has provided another reason for the American people not to trust government. It may have also created a convenient diversion from other embarrassing events scheduled to take place this week! Just saying...
