Looked up the Cane Corso breed on the AKC web site. It was described as "unequaled" when it comes to being a protector of its owner, family and home. Probably, the officer was justified in firing at the dog, but missed the target.

Best wishes for a full & speedy recovery for Officer Bryant. Hope the officer who fired gets all the help he needs in coping with this situation.

I've worked with many breeds, but there's a reason I will leave the Mastif's and Corso's to more of a professional. Even though this article lacks all the details, I can see why the officer panicked.
I've spent 9 years living in a drug infested area in the past, and please allow me to share this. Law abiding citizens try to help out and rid themselves of the filth in their neighborhood by dropping hints, I was often that person. What they tend NOT to do is call animal control on the filth that shouldn't own a dog in the first place, and/or using them to gaurd their stash/home.
Only if a concerned citizen could have just dropped a call to an "AC" Officer. then just maybe the threat could have been removed prior to the bust?. (Please read between the lines)
This is Very tragic for all involved.

A local (to the incident) news source says the dog was not a pit bull but a Cane Corso--which is an Italian dog related to mastiffs.
