Robo is of course correct.I would imagine the city would be liable for the shrink bills envolved ,as well.He could ,with the aid of an attorney, claim a stress related disability, wheather fired or not.
I would like to add an incident that happened at my old Department. A fairly new Officer was hired and he was someone that wanted friends and to be acted very badly. Like all new Officers he was subjected to the ribbing everyone goes through about being a rookie etc. He reached out to me for friendship and in retrospect as acceptance. I fault myself because I did not really understand how desperate he was for acceptance and as I was a senior and respected guy he tried to latch onto me. Apparently I was not the only one. A few months later while on solo patrol he called in an Officer needs help and he was found beat up and even his gear from his utility belt scattered around in a lonely area. He claimed two bikers came out of the woods and when questioned they jumped him. Big no-no in our department so he was taken to the ER to make sure he was okay and everyone went looking for these attackers. I was on a motor at the time and rode the trail that the bikers supposedly took and could find no evidence of recent activity on the trail. His injuries were also slight. Under questioning he finally admitted he made the story up just because he wanted to be one of the guys and respected. We had to fire him but so many of us wondered if he might have been a good Officer had we seen and accepted him into the fold that he so desperately wanted. Still, you lie, your career is over.
This is a very sad incident. They need to find out why this Sgt. lied. Did he accidentally shoot himself and then being afraid of the stigma that would be attached to that he lied to avoid the embarrassment or did he wish for attention and go as far as actually shooting himself to gain this notoriety or sympathy from his brother Officers? This Sgt. needs the be placed under an investigation from both LEOs and Metal health individuals to find out the why behind this incident. No matter what, his career is over because he lied but let us help him and find out what the problem is.
