A major bump Ms. Marly. This is why I have been reluctant to vote for eons.We so frequently are given the option of the studied liar or the kinda liar be it in the congressional,Senate or presidential races.Tis not a surprise that so few Americans appear at the voting booths.
Well, mz66 once the arsenal of a "clever well-meaning statesman" includes lying to the public he's not a "maybe huckster", but a genuine one. And he's lost my vote.
Amen to the congress being diseased Matt.It began,I would say,at a slow pace decades ago.It is now so rampant that the congress doesn't care who knows. They flaunt it at the American public. One wonders how so many used car salesmen made it to D.C. I don't know that the disease can be slowed
Maybe huckster, but maybe clever well-meaning statesman. Congress is diseased. I'll swallow a few of that kind of huckster in order to slow the disease's progress.
Aha,exactly. He tells people what they want to hear, not what is real or what he honestly believes in.Typical of most modern pols. This is precisely why I am not enamored with the vast majority of politicians of either major party.Frankly I don't believe he's much of an influence with anyone anymore. Both parties tend to eat their own, especially after losing a presidential or v.,p. race. How often do we hear of Bob Dole,Jack Kemp,John Kerry, etc. etc.
If you mean the way he tells the Tea Party nutters what they want to hear so he can stay in the game and be a moderating influence in this polarizing climate--good on him. I've got no problem with that. We need good people to not be driven out by the whims of the idiots who are temporarily (hopefully) driving the discussion these days.
Matt I concur that what senator McCain said was quite gentlemanly and proper.Coming to someones assistance when one deems it the thing to do ,especially a person of the opposing party, is worthy of mention. He does ,however, have a track record of not always being sincere.I hope he is in this instance.
MarlyB.I believe I would vote for Kennedy if he were alive today and not because he was cute.He did pick up a number of Republican votes,as Reagan picked up a number of Democratic votes.I even miss "Give Em Hell" Harry Truman. He and Kennedy were definately the last of the Democrats to fit into the Jackson -Jefferson mold of the Democratic party.
Palin was catapulted into the campaign to viagrize McCain's flagging ticket with a flood of "Cindy-John-Sarah" threesome shots splashed all over the media. A boy-oing factor that flopped.
Now it's all been reduced to...hair.
So if you Palin fans will excuse me its time to jump into the Wayback Machine and go vote for Kennedy because he was cute.

Well, the "kinda liar" is holding the line against the studied liars that are behind stirring up the gullible Tea Party faithful--that's how I see it.

That's why I view it in the context of a disease. One must sometimes take a bitter pill in order to affect the cure.

Yeah telling people what they want to hear in order to garner their votes is the calling card of the huckster. A red flag.
ssu459, agreed Kennedy had many fine qualities as a statesman and president - traits altogether absent in GOP spokesmodel Sarah Palin.

Influence--maybe not within the party, but on the Senate floor, Dave. Just a few tidbits here:
John McCain: Start of fifth Senate term (wikipedia)
I also agree with what is quoted in the wiki article about the nature of the 2012 campaign and the Citizens United decision.

Good for you copper380.I also like Palin and Bachman WAY better than McCain. They don't change their minds on an hourly basis as McCain does.
