I knew of an elected Sheriff who could not carry a firearm because he was a convicted felon, but that was when the Sheriff was not required to be a certified LEO. That has since changed and even the Sheriff is now required to be a state certified LEO. This mess is crazy, but I do not understand why NM does not recognize the exception for the firearm that TX gave the Chief. As for the officer, domestic violence disqualifys all LEOs across the country, so why was he even hired?
This is stupid. I can understand and sympathize with the Chief as I know that sometimes guys get unfairly nailed in divorce settlements but the young guy is not certified and has issues so it is a no brainer to fire him. Either find two guys that are certified and hire them or disband the Dept and allow the SO to take over the calls.
Personally, I think the longer the city of Vaughn allows these two to police the city as currently restricted because of their legal issues, the more the city opens itself up to legal claims that it will not be able to compensate for. It would be in the best interest of the city to disband the police department and contract with the county sheriff's department.
Wow. I hope nothing serious happens in Vaughn, New Mexico. The citizens have weapons, the police don't.
Ya my friend's son graduated the sheriff's academy a couple weeks before he was 21. He had to wait for his sidearm.
According to that article one officer is on probation while the other is not an officer. With out going to the academy he does not have state certification. He is only working for the city/town. I did not think that while on probation you could carry a fire arm, I thought it was a part of being an officer to be able to carry a fire arm..Sounds like the city/town does not have any real Law Enforcement.
Just seems like there should be 2 openings in that dept
I'll bet there are at least 2 good Officers looking for work.
