New Smyrna Beach is notorious for shark bites. The reason is the there are thousands of small sharks feeding and born right there. The bites are usually small and in most cases are because someone actually bumped into a shark with their foot and the shark bit it, realized it tastes bad, (Apparently humans taste terrible), and immediately spit back out. Stay our of water that is murky with lots of sand mixed in with the surf line, stay out of the water from dusk to after dawn as that is when they feed, and pay attention to the lifeguards as they can often tell you if their are many sharks out there in the water. I have seen overhead photos and videos of the coast and it is terrifying to see just how many sharks are out there in this area. I know this all to be true as we live 40 miles north of that beach in St Augustine. Very seldom any bites here but still lots of sharks offshore. Don't know why less bites, just are.
