Bump Ot322, Robo and gradyg!
I think we all are racist in one way another our thoughts are different about each other but those folks who are both racist and a bigot who think that if you do not believe in what they believe in will kill you if they can. If you ever served in the military you will run into bigots and racist people, I have deal with bigots and racist people in my life but the ones who are worser then the two mention are the people who are prejudice. Prejudice is more prevalent in the northern states then the southern states, there is more segregation in the north then the south and I have lived and went to school in both. I think prejudice has more to do with why race is still an issue not because someone is a bigot or racist.
Bump SHadley! I was born and raised in New England and while there was only one Black family in my entire town, (they were also my next door neighbors and very close friends) I knew of people who would act and talk like they were appalled at all this supposed racism in the South and how they treated the 'Negro' so unfairly. I bought into that BS until I moved to NC at 16. The second day there I was jumped by a black kid who tried to stab me calling me a 'white SOB' I just did not understand as I had never seen this kid or talked to him! I then met some white guys that were bigots, some were prejudiced and many if not most just did not care what color you were. I also made friends with a number of people who happened to be Black and one turned out to be my best friend. He is also the one that explained to me that while he was normally not welcome to live in "my" neighborhood he could visit with no real problems from it. He also told me that "I" could NOT come to his home unless on business as I was not only not welcome, it could be dangerous to me AND to him in retaliation. Understand that this was when the riots in the mid 60's were going on as well.
I did find that a Southern person if they did not like Black folks would openly say so. Like Steve said, it was wrong and stupid BUT, at least you knew where you stood. I also was caught up in this as I was obviously a Yankee whenever I opened my Boston accented mouth! The thing is, up where I was born in Mass. I had heard about a mixed marriage couple who were shunned and hated for being mixed. Additionally all these 'concerned for the black people' Northern folks suddenly turned into race hating vicious bigots when the Feds ruled integrations and busing must start up there as well as the South! Southerners were already working together and living together for quite some time and it wasn't any big deal down there.
Now I am not so blind to think that there were not serious racial problems in the South back then but the North was much worse as they would look you directly in the eye and tell you they were not prejudiced when they were in fact raging bigots! In the South out in the country for the most part we hung out with each other and really could care less. I'll go for the honesty any day.
Props to snhadley. @Lanier...for someone to make such a statement as you did, only shows your bigotry and racism...
Lanier, my wife is from Alabama and she is not racist. Her Father nor her Mother was/are racist. Her Brother is not racist. Now, on the other hand her grandfather and I say that loosely for several reasons was a card carrying member of the klan. So based on my and I do say my expierences to paint an entire state as racist is reckless. The problem with states like Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Tennesse, Kentucky is that good people remain silent but I would rather live in the south with some of their peoples in your face attitude, than to live anywhere in the US. Simply because I know what I'm working with verses the smile in your face and stab you in the back personalities I have found elsewhere in the US. Please do not construe my statement to mean there are not good people in other states. Racism is on the downturn across the US and as long as we have a dialogue about it it will be buried in underseams of the fabric of this country. I blame no race for what I don't have. I blame me for not getting it.
Take a look at the state of Alabama it has been one of the biggest racism state in the United State ,and it has been for along time , and nothing new about.
I agree Steve that it is all wrong and I for one am just sick of it trying to be reasonable and factual with people who remain bigoted no matter what. I'll still speak out against it but it is just getting so darn old.
