My point, is that, so far, SecNav Mabus, with the encouragement and probably the guidance of the Clown Prince at 1600 Pennsylvania has seen fit to name 3 ships after democrats or their supporters. After having it blow up in his face, he's now acknowledged that the Navy will go back to the previous practices of naming ships. The next two ships in the same class as the USS Giffords will be named the USS Omaha and the USS Sioux City. What's different? Why? He got heat from active duty and retired military and others that saw this for the cynical, PC stunt that it was.
As far as the USS Murtha, as most of the troops I know have decided that "Murtha" is a term they would associate with the burning of 55gal drums of human waste, the USS Murtha will probably be known to the Marines that embark on it as the USS S--t Can.
As far as "feeling good", that's for sensitivity training, not for combat, and items that are used in combat.

http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/weapons/RS22478.pdf The first link is an official research guide to naming ships. The second link contains all of the names of ships. http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/name.htm
(There is a ship named for John Murtha, perhaps that was your point wt259). It appears that there are loose rules that apply to naming various kinds of ships (see first link). It is essentially a political decision and pressures are brought to bear when ships are named. We don't have to agree, but I agree with 1g1b1u that as a member of congress (congress members are one category of persons after whom ships are named) who inspired people with her strength and example, Rep. Giffords is a good choice . Obviously, some are not inspired by her, as seen in this forum,, but many have been. There are always many deserving people after whom a ship could be named, but this time it was Gabby Giffords. I doubt there was a secret strategy behind the choice. It is a symbolic choice standing for a person who survived and one who didn't survive (the child who died) a tragic event that touched many Americans-- some Republicans, as well as many democrats and independents.

I think the ship should be named after her. She's hung in there and worked hard to get where she is today. She's an inspiration to me. Just when I think my life is bad all I have to do is look at her and see things could be alot worse. Besides she's not married to just anybody. She's married to an astronaut. That says something right there. Just sayin.....

Must be the Navy couldn't find a corpsman, or sailor, who would merit having a ship named after him/her? Or, call me cynical, perhaps this was done to upstage Fast & Furious and the mess on the border?
This is as bad as naming a ship for John Murtha, or Cesar Chavez.
Robo, MoH recipients have Destroyers named after them, the USS Michael Monsoor, the USS Michael Murphy and the USS Jason Dunham, to name three that come to mind.

Okay I am sorry but I have to step in here and say that yes this is touching and very feel good. Also I an glad that Rep Giffords survived her wounds at the hands of this mentally ill individual. Still, this attack that killed a few and wounds others and Rep Giffords was not a political assassination attempt. Just a crazy person. Rep Giffords did a great job in rehab and she is back to be a functioning individual even though she is suffering from brain damage. I am very glad she survived
HOWEVER, Rep Giffords has done nothing for the US Navy and was not even in Congress very long. There are way too many individuals whose name should appear on this ship instead of hers. Courage? No, it's called a the will to live and most of us have this. She happened to be involved in a tragic shooting but she did survive were many others did not. What about honoring those individuals who have received the Medal of Honor? How about the Navy Cross or something else or someone who helped push for an increase in new weapons or ships or who was able to get funding for newer and better equipment? They would be more deserving than Rep. Giffords. She is probably a very nice lady and I may be someone who I would really like but that is not what or why we name Naval Ships for. I hope that I have not upset anyone with this but it is my feelings that she has done nothing to deserve this honor when there are many Naval or Military Heroes that deserved to be honored like this.

The video is very moving. I wasn't aware of the "sponsor." Very nice touch.
