The Sullivan law in N.Y. is extremely strict, and is enforced accordingly. If the SEAL couldn't prove his status satisfactorily, he's gonna feel the bracelets. He should have had some kind of documentation, ID, etc. to back up his claim. Hope it comes OK in the end for him, and I hope all of the other members of "elite military units" take note of how this happened, for their own good, and make the adjustment.
I am going to agree that this guy should have been carrying his ID. The excuse abouthow many military guys come back from overseas and kill...niot many more statistacally as cops who have lost it, especially if you count ex-cops who we have tossed off the force because they could not hack it. Most military are darg good people and are the guys that will help you out of a bind. I would have let him go with a warning if it had been me, but that is just me and MY discreation. Even if all he had was a military ID.
As for those folks that do not think SEALs are special, I'll just leave it at this, THEY ARE! I have felt that way since 1968 for very good reasons and NOTHING in the last 40 plus years has changed my mind.
I looked into what really happen, and found out that the SEAL started to act like an EDP. He thought he was above the Law because of his status. Well im sorry to say i dont care who what or were your from if you want to get disoderly with LEO then you pay the price.
It's just the same as if you have a bb-gun, sling shot for hunting. Or even rape victim who thinks it's ok to carry a taser, or pepper spray for their protection anywhere in New York state. I have no sympathy for them if they don't take a few days to read through all of laws of New York. I'm just going to laugh when they get arrested. It's their fault for being dumb!
I still say the guy is a whiner. Police need to take care of their own! This guy could of been a regular civilian with a gun! a) he didn't do his homework on the gun laws before coming into New York. b) you're just a civilian if you don't have ze papers. c) he's lucky because when there's guns involved, it's shoot first ask questions later.
It's not the cops fault he couldn't identify himself as someone who has real rights to carry.

Bump Robo and rafaelmorales, I have several members of my dept and one of them is a former NYPD officer who spoke very highly of the NYPD and how they handle off duty cops when they were in NYC on vacation. RM I understand but do not agree how they handled this Seal! I hope as Robo says he gets a very light slap on his wrist!
usmc1481, please understand that the NY City laws are not the same in the rest of the state. NY City has stricter gun control laws than the rest of the state.
To everyone that thinks the NYPD is going crazy locking up people from the other States or Military persons for having a Hand gun in our city, Well let me tell u when you go to get a Gun Lic your are told and how and were you are able to carry your firearm. Being Ignorant to the law of NYC when it comes to Permits is not our fault. Do your homework before you come into our city. Other LEO throughout the States are good too Go in our CITY, We take care of our own. I have pulled over LEO from other Dept. before Chicago LA Minn. Fl. and i gave them the upmost respect and Curtisy. Because to me and all my brothers and sisters of the NYPD if you are LEO your our fellow brothers and sisters. How many stories have you heard of Military guys coming home and killing Cops. We are not going to take any chances, I served my country 3 yrs in the U.S. Army and never did anything stupid to put LEO in any type of a bad situatuion. And to respond to (mmmm) YOU HAVE YOUR FACTS WRONG WE DONT LOCK UP OFF DUTY COPS, ONLY IF THEY COMMIT CRIMES AND IM SURE THAT GOES EVERY WERE THRU OUT THE U.S.....
I am so tired of this New Yoork B.S. The last time I checked we still had a US Constitution and it affords the 2nd Admendment for firearms. I think that someone needs to start putting some pressure on the other 49 state senators to bring this issue up in the senate. If New York wants to suceed from the United States and become there own country let them do that first before taking rights away from law obiding citizens and officers. Look at the robbery, mugging, and murder rate in New York, it is throgh the roof The reason is that the thugs and criminals know that the person that they are robbing is not armed and like shooting fish in a barrell.
NYPD is for some reason very quick to arrest anyone with a firearm. There are even cases where off duty officers have been arrested, even since the passage of nationwide carry laws. The mistake this man made was admitting he had a weapon and/or allowing them to search his vehicle. The best course for anyone to follow whether he thinks he is violating the law or not is to simply invoke his constitutional rights against warrentless searches and to exersise his right to remain silent. Many of today's cops are more concerned with making arrests than with doing what's right.
