Police Commander Arrested On Battery Charge

Associated Press

August 01, 2011

CHARLESTOWN, Ind.— State police say a top commander in a southern Indiana sheriff’s department has been arrested on domestic battery charges after his wife reported being beaten by him.

Troopers arrested Lt. Col. John Shelton of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department at his home in Charlestown early Sunday.

Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden tells the Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., (http://bit.ly/qL4ULJ ) that the 57-year-old Shelton is the department’s second-shift commander. The sheriff says Shelton spent the night in jail before being released without bail with orders from a judge to stay away from his wife.

Rodden says he plans to meet with Shelton on Monday to discuss the confrontation and decide what to do next.

Shelton couldn’t be reached for comment because no phone number was listed for him.

A blow to police culture either way.

If Mrs. Shelton's charges are false, her playing the 'ace card' only underscores the hazards of trusting a wife or girlfriend to engage in honest and productive conflict.

The visor snaps shut. Tension builds. Relationships suffer. Superficial relationships or ones where the wife or girlfriend routinely capitulate look more attractive.

I'm not going to day anything pro or con about this matter. I do know a person can harm theirself and scream their spouse did it. The spouse is later arrested. Also were the spouse has actually done physical harm to their partner. Most of us have seen this in LE. I let the investigation take it's course before my rarks. With that said, I'm gone

Wow, I don't believe some of the comments here.
How about backing OUR brother who made the arrest.
This officer was ARRESTED and CHARGED for a
    domestic assault by ANOTHER OFFICER.
Yes, this officer may beat it BUT
the next time any LEO on this site makes an
domestic assault arrest and the perp beats it,
remember your comments regarding this officer's
charges. Just like any officer's arrest, presented evidence
indicated a crime was committed, probable cause was found
to arrest and an LEO made the arrest of this officer.

I, and I am sure most other officers, have cought women scratching themselves, hitting themselves and even banging their body off of objects to cause marks that would lead to their spouse being charged and arrested. I believe little of what I hear and half of what I see when it comes to domestic violence. Let the investigation be completely conducted and then the chips fall where they may. My main thought is why would a senior member of a Sheriff's office throw everything away after so many years. The spouse of officers know we will be run through the wringers over just saying there was a violent confrontation. Lets wait and see.

I agree with Irishcop, let it play out. I have seen too many men set up by the wife or girlfiend when in fact they didn't do anything.
